The carnival in the tourist resort of Puerto de la Cruz is one of the largest and most important on Tenerife. Every year its spirit of fun takes over locals and visitors alike, who easily get involved in the "fiesta." Fancy dress balls, parades, galas and other unusual events, such as the traditional rally of vintage cars, the fun race known as, "Mascarita ponte el tacón" (mask and high heels) or the election of a Drag Queen are just some of the outstanding events in its programme. In Puerto de la Cruz the festival begins with the election of the Junior and Adult Carnival Queens in a great show, which includes performances by Comparsas (dance groups), Murgas (comic groups) and other carnival groups. The opening procession signals the start of the carnival in the street, which does not end until the "Piñata" Sunday. The "Piñata" Saturday and Sunday are extra days of celebration following the "entierro de la sardina" (burial of the sardine), on Ash Wednesday, which officially marks the end of these festivals all over the world. However, the most important event in the Puerto de la Cruz is held on "Piñata" Saturday, known as the "Gran Coso" ( Parade), the finale in which carnival groups from all over the island participate. This coastal town has close carnival ties with Dusseldorf in Germany. Every year a German delegation comes to Puerto de la Cruz, and representatives of the Puerto de la Cruz Carnival travel to Dusseldorf, a tradition that has been going on for 25 years.
