We can find up to 21 different species in Tenerife’s waters; from the colossal blue whale to the feared killer whale. It can be difficult to differentiate one species from another just by watching these animals in open water, particularly if they are not close enough to your vessel.  Nevertheless, there some key characteristics which are easier to spot than others in order to be able to identify which species of you are looking at:

  • Size
  • Shape of the animals head, dorsal fin, body and tail
  • Body colour
  • Observing behaviour
  • Residents: settled in the same place throughout the year
