Water sport - different levels of difficulty
Windsurfing, a form of surfing powered by a sail, has grown in popularity since its inception in the 1960s. Today, it is one of the Olympic disciplines in which several Spanish sportspeople have been awarded medals. El Médano is internationally recognised for its great conditions for this sport: constant wind for nearly 300 days a year, wind speeds of 12-25 knots on average, water temperature over 18 degrees and year-round good weather averaging 20 degrees in winter and 27 degrees in summer.
Some of the world’s best windsurfers live in El Médano, a town which forms part of the municipality of Granadilla de Abona. In 2013, for the second consecutive year, El Médano will host the Professional Windsurfers Association (PWA) World Championships. There are several companies that provide equipment hire and offer training courses for all levels.
