City Hall of La Laguna

A historic monument in Santa Cruz-La Laguna

The municipal palace of La Laguna has undergone a series of changes since the 16th century. The most significant alteration took place in 1822 and created the main façade made of stone by Juan Nepomuceno Conejo, which constitutes the finest sample of civil Neoclassical architecture in the Canary Islands. The part of the building that overlooks Calle la Carrera and Calle Obispo Rey Redondo still preserves the old gateway of the Casa del Corregidor (the Chief Magistrate's House).

The front bears the coat of arms of Charles V, together with that of Tenerife on one side and the Island's Governor Jerónimo de Sotomayor on the other side.

The public meetings hall features a magnificent coffered ceiling in Canarian Mudejar style. It also houses significant relics such as: the banner branded by the governor Alonso Fernández de Lugo when he conquered Tenerife on behalf of the Castilian Crown.

Also, the Royal Charter of 1510 from Queen Juana "The Mad" of Castile granting La Laguna the title of a city; the coat of arms, which is also the shield of Tenerife; and the Historic Archive, which is one of the most comprehensive on the Canary Islands.
