Scopoli's shearwater

A bird living in the coastal areas of Tenerife

Scopoli's shearwaters (Calonectris diomedea) are easy to spot off the coast of Tenerife, especially around the Roques de Anaga rock formations. These birds fly low and can withstand strong winds. They spend the months of February to November in Tenerife. These shearwaters make their nests inside small caves on the cliffs and rock formations, and some nest inland. They are nocturnal birds and can be heard soon after nightfall making their guttural sound which resembles a murmur or a cry. The Scopoli's shearwater was chosen Bird of the Year in 2013 by the Spanish Society of Ornitology SEO/Birdlife.
