Tenerife gecko

An endemic reptile living on Tenerife's coast and highlands

This small reptile is endemic to the Canary Islands and lives mostly on the islands of Tenerife and La Palma. Measuring 6 to 7 cm (2.4 to 2.8 inches) long, the Tenerife gecko (Tarentola delalandii) lives in all sorts of habitats on the Island: From the coast all the way up to 2,000 m (6,560 ft) above sea level, in rocky areas, walls and stone houses. The adhesive layer on its fingers enables it to climb easily so as to reach the insects and spiders it feeds on. The Tenerife gecko has a grey back with yellowy-golden eyes and is most active at night.
