Icod de los Vinos

The Millenary Dragon Tree is probably the most symbolic landmark in Icod de los Vinos. A visit to the tree is a must, as is a walk around the cobbled streets and lovely squares with fountains in the heart of the municipality. You will also find one of the world's largest volcanic tubes in this municipality, in Cueva del Viento.

The municipality of Icod de los Vinos lies in north-western Tenerife on an expanse of approximately 90 km2 (35 sq miles). Here is where the Millenary Dragon Tree stands (Dracaena draco), which was declared a National Monument in 1917 and is believed to be 800 years old. On the coast you will find the beach of Playa de San Marcos and you mustn't leave without visiting the lava tunnels of Cueva del Viento. You will also see that Icod de los Vinos affords one of the loveliest views of Mount Teide, Spain's highest peak.

The municipality's economy was traditionally based on vineyards and fishing, which has of course influenced the local gastronomy: Potatoes with mojo sauce, salted fish, grilled meat, fine wines and hand-made cheeses. The historic-artistic heritage of the old town is one of the most appealing attractions for visitors to this municipality.

The historic quarter of Icod de los Vinos is easy to discover by taking a leisurely stroll around its streets, with its little chapels, churches and historically significant buildings. Most of the sights are close together so it is simple to follow a route that reveals every single one of the municipalities wonderful secrets. We recommend you start at the information stand located in Plaza de América and walk along Calle del Buen Suceso, then across Plaza de Luis León Huerta. You will then come to the Church of San Agustín and the Town Hall, which was originally a monastery. Close to it is the old Monastery of San Francisco, which now houses the municipal library. The next stop is Plaza Andrés de Lorenzo Cáceres, one of the municipality's most beautiful squares, and opposite is the Church of San Marcos. The church contains several figures made in the workshops of different Spanish and American religious artists. By the church is the quaint square of Plaza de la Constitución, with its attractive central fountain. The landscape in this part of the municipality is defined by the majestic silhouette of the Millenary Dragon Tree which can be glimpsed from Plaza Andrés de Lorenzo Cáceres, but it is worth visiting the Park of the Milennary Dragon Tree to see this living National Monument up-close.
