Turismo de Tenerife was created by the Cabildo de Tenerife (Tenerife Island Authority), its main shareholder, in June 1992 under the name of Sociedad de Promoción Exterior de Tenerife (SPET), with the aim of starting up a tourism strategy where the public administrations and businesspeople could join forces and pool their knowledge so as to participate actively in the promotion of the Island as a holiday destination. In 2006, its growing range of powers and responsibilities led to the change to the current denomination, Turismo de Tenerife, which is the body currently responsible for the constant improvement of the Island as a holiday destination as well as for spreading the word about its values overseas, with the creation of professional holiday strategies and the establishment of strategic alliances.
Turismo de Tenerife, as the Destination's Tourism Manager, has as its mission to foment a dynamic and competitive framework with wide social, institutional and business backing for the establishment and permanent repositioning of the Island as a Holiday Destination, promoting the participation of all sectors which in one way or another can contribute to improving the range of options.
Turismo de Tenerife is a company belonging to the Tenerife Island Authority or Cabildo, and its operating model is based on association (it has some five hundred associated companies and institutions), which has allowed it to create a business structure that is flexible and, at the same time, participative, with all the material and human resources necessary for the fulfilment of its objectives.
According to the Articles of Turismo de Tenerife, the President of the Cabildo of Tenerife holds the Chairmanship of the Company, while the Island Councillor for Tourism holds the first Deputy Chairmanship.
