The Ibero-American Animation Quirino Awards have opened the call for entries for its first edition’s different categories, being celebrated on April 7th 2018 in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain.

The initiative, that looks forward to value the Ibero-American animation talent and industry, receives animated works from the region’s 23 countries that have been released between January 1st 2016 and December 31st 2017. The call for entries has itself nine categories: feature film, series, short film, school short film, innovative work, commissioned film, visual development, animation design and sound design and original music.

Works whose original language is mostly Spanish, Portuguese or other non-hegemonic languages spoken in the Ibero American region may be submitted in this call. Although it could be also submitted works by Ibero-American production companies that are produced directly in other languages. The works must be submitted via Festhome before 23:59 (Mexican Time) December 8th.

Among all the submitted works there is going to be six nominated per category, to be announced the first week of January 2018. Among these selected works, an international jury will choose the three finalists on each category, that will aim for the Awards that will be presented on April 7th in Tenerife.

Parallely to the awards, the organization has the purpose to generate networks and favour the circulation of works in both sides of the ocean by organizing two more activities: The International Coproduction Forum and The International Iberoamerican Animation Congress. Both oriented to animation professionals, these activities will take place on April 6th and 7th in the same island town where the animated sectors of Latin America, Portugal, Andorra and Spain will gather together.

The awards are named after the first animation feature film creator of history, the Argentinian-Italian Quirino Cristiani, that in 1917 directed “El Apóstol”; an Argentinian production in which 58.000 hand drawn cartoons were used and recorded in 35mm, as well as several mockups representing Buenos Aires’ public buildings and streets. Of his work even the giant Disney talked about it, as he has travelled to Argentina in 1941 for the release of “Fantasia”.

The Quirino Awards has the main sponsor of Turismo de Tenerife and the collaboration of some of the most important international animation events celebrated in Ibero America, such as the Mexican Pixelatl Animation, Video Games and Comic Festival of Cuernavaca and the Spanish 3D Wire International Animation, Video Games and New Media Market; among others.
