Sporting events in Tenerife, what we have experienced and what will come next

Tenerife is a great island for all kinds of sporting events. From tough mountain trails to triathlons which will test all your physical abilities. Recently we have experienced three big events: Tenerife Walking Festival, Las Américas Pro and Tenerife Bluetrail, although there are still big events to be held. Let’s review what we have lived through and what is to come.

Tenerife Walking Festival 2018

Tenerife Walking Festival is the ideal international hiking event if you want to enjoy the landscapes of the island in a more tranquil way. Almost 200 hikers of 14 nationalities came together this year in Puerto de la Cruz. The coastal city in the north of Tenerife served as a base camp to explore the 20 trails of the festival.

Evento Senderismo Tenerife

Hiking trails through volcanic, coastal and forest landscapes made it possible to get to know Tenerife in a unique way. In addition, numerous conferences and activities were offered. One of the highlights of the event was the farewell party at the Plaza de Europa with music and local cuisine.

TWF Senderismo Tenerife

If you missed this issue, don’t worry. The Tenerife Walking Festival will be held again in 2019, probably in May, and again hiking enthusiasts from all over the world will come together to get to know the landscape, the contrasts and the culture of our island.

Las Americas Pro, the best international surfing in Tenerife

Surf Tenerife Campeonato

At the beginning of the year we were able to watch the world’s best surfers of the World Surf League (WSL) in Arona. During five days, competitions were held with surfers from around the world at the most famous surf spot of the island “La izquierda de Las Palmeras”. The Basque Ruben Vitoria and the Australian Mikaela Greene were among the victories. Even in Siam Park, a small sample of their surfing skills was given on the world’s largest artificial wave.

Tenerife Bluetrail 2018

From the sand of Playa Fañabé to the volcano Mount Teide, crossing Tenerife from south to north. The Ultra Tenerife Bluetrail is the highest mountain race in Spain and the second highest in Europe, reaching 3,555 metres in height in its 102 kilometres of total distance.

Trailrunning Evento deportivo Tenerife

Up to 2,400 runners from 38 different countries participated in the event this year, split into different modalities: Ultra, Trail, Marathon, Media and Challenge. Among the runners was the South American Lorena Ramírez. She set a global milestone, as she ran the ultra-race in her national costume and her “Huaraches”, a traditional sandal from her village Tarahumara.

Ganadores Tenerifebluetrail 2018, Evento Deportivo Tenerife

Yeray Durán from Gran Canaria, along with the Cantabrian Azara García, were the first to reach the finish line in the male and female categories. The podium was completed by Senga Sherpa and Nadezna Surmonina in second place and Antonio Gonzalez and Bernadette Benson in third place. The next Cajamar Tenerife Bluetrail will be held on June 8th, 2019, and registration will start on September 1st. Register in time!

These were the three big events of the year, but we had and still have more to offer:

Infinity Xtreme 2018

This competition is really funny, but also exhausting! You have to overcome natural and artificial obstacles that requires to be in a good physical condition. There are also participants who disguise themselves as superheroes with super powers. This year, on July 14th, the 10th anniversary took place.

There are many attractions where you can relax, enjoy the surroundings and artificial landscapes, inspired by Thai culture and architecture. Lago Martiánez, an artwork by César Manrique
Lago Martiánez Puerto de la Cruz

In Puerto de la Cruz is one of the most beautiful works of the Canarian artist César Manrique: the Lago Martiánez, an architectural genius since its artificial lake of 33,000 square metres was an engineering challenge that would not be completed until 1977.

It was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest in the Historic Garden category in 2005. Within the complex, next to the lake itself, are five seawater swimming pools surrounded by tropical gardens, terraces, cultural spaces, bars and restaurants. There are 13 sculptures (wind toys) by César Manrique scattered all over the site, making it not only a fun bathing experience, but also an art and culture excursion.

Palmetum de Santa Cruz, the best collection of palm trees in Europe

Palmetum Santa Cruz

From the garbage dump to the lush botanical garden on 12 acres. This is how we could summarise the history of the Palmetum of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The botanical garden is home to up to 2,000 species of plants, of which 400 are palm trees.

It was inaugurated in 2014, becoming one of the great attractions of the city by joining the landscape environment of the Tenerife Auditorium and the Maritime Park. In the Palmetum there is not only a great collection of plants, also the fauna benefits from the botanical garden. Several species of birds have settled here, making it to a great place for bird watching.

The beach of Los Cristianos, the city merges with the sea

Playa de Los Cristianos

The beach of Los Cristianos was one of the first beaches that attracted tourists in the 60s. With calm waves and golden sand, you can take a peaceful walk around. Dive into the local fishing atmosphere by enjoying gastronomic delights in one of the many restaurants.

Nearby you will also find the beach Las Vistas. You will easily recognise it with its distinctive artificial island in the centre. The pleasant atmosphere invites families of all kinds to take a long walk along the coast.
