Sporting events 2019 in Tenerife – a year full of new challenges

The sports calendar of Tenerife 2019 is full of big events and that’s not surprising. Top athletes such as tennis players Dominic Thiem and Karolína Plíšková, both top 10 ATP and WTA, were training on the island for their tournaments this year, but they were not the only ones training with us.

Cyclists like Alberto Contador or Chris Froome; football teams such as Liverpool FC, Manchester City, FC Augsburg or even Olympic swimmers like Sarah Sjöström were in the training camp in Tenerife. WSL Pro Las Américas

From February 4th to 10th the World Surf League competition “Las Americas Pro“ returns to the largest of the Canary Islands. Last year, Ruben Vitoria and Australian Mikaela Greene won the competition. The place “Izquierda de la Palmera” will once again attract surfers from around the world to compete against each other in this scoring event for WSL’s European Qualifying Series.

 

Cycling tour Vuelta al Teide

The Vuelta al Teide Cycling Tour will take you through iconic places in Tenerife such as the Teno Rural Park or the Teide National Park on March 30th. The main route of the tour consists of a total of 160 kilometres with a total ascent of almost 4,000 metres – a tough test. The Half Teide is another modality with 90 kilometres of route and “only” 2,000 meters of altitude.

It is the epitome of the hiking festival in Tenerife. The event combines some of the island’s best hiking trails with local traditions, culture, cuisine and encouraging tours of such emblematic places as Anaga or El Teide. This year’s edition will take place from May 21st to 25th and Puerto de la Cruz will once again be the meeting and starting point for those who are passionate about nature and its paths.

From zero to 3,555 metres of altitude. The Tenerife Bluetrail is the highest mountain race in Spain and the second largest in Europe. And for good reason, because the over 100-kilometre track in Ultra Trail mode is a challenge for all participants. Over 2,000 runners registered for the various modalities in 2018, highlighting the participation of the rarámuri (tarahumara = ethnicity from northern Mexico known for long-distance runs through deserts, canyons, mountains) Lorena Ramírez who finished third in the senior category. This year, the race will take place on June 8th and the registrations are already open.

El Médano is an ideal place to practice windsurfing. This makes it one of the most privileged circuits of the PWA World Championship, which will visit us again in the second half of August. In addition to the World Windsurfing Championships, there will be workshops to repair and create surfboards and training courses, as well as a great range of food and leisure activities.

In October 2019, all the athletes who are looking for a special challenge in nature, such as the millennial laurel forests, can be lucky. Because the Santa Cruz Extreme will be held in Tenerife. This run leads through the Anaga Rural Park, which starts from the beach Las Teresitas and leads through the forests of the Laurisilva along old farmhouses. This run offers three different levels of difficulty.

 

International Marathon of Santa Cruz de Tenerife

One of the most famous international marathons is the Santa Cruz de Tenerife marathon. The last time (fifth edition) 4,000 participants from 60 different countries came together. This urban race leads through the streets of the capital of Tenerife and is a great festive event, with a lot of sportsmanship and above all good weather. This event will be one of the last sporting events of the year as it takes place on November 10th.
