How to travel around Tenerife on public transport

We all have questions about how to travel around when we get to a new place. If you come to Tenerife for the first time and want to travel by public transport, here are your options…

Transport options in Tenerife

When arriving in Tenerife, one of the most requested options is that of a rental car, although if you prefer there is a wide range of public transport with which you can travel to any corner of the island in the most comfortable way possible.

Public buses (guaguas) in Tenerife

You can get to any area of Tenerife (even to Mount Teide!) by using the distinctive green buses (guaguas) run by the TITSA bus company.

All TITSA vehicles have been adapted to safety and hygiene standards that guarantee that your trip is safe. Remember that you must wear a mask if you are going to use the bus and that payment in cash is not possible.

You must pay with a ten + card, available at TITSA’s information and sales offices at bus stations, or with the Ten + Movil app.

TITSA has now set up new tourist rates which give you unlimited bus and tram trips for a day or week.

Speaking of trams, let us tell you about Tenerife’s excellent tram network…

Trams in Tenerife

The Tenerife tram network connects the capital city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife with San Cristóbal de La Laguna, a World Heritage Site, in just 30 minutes. The tourist pass we mentioned above is valid for both buses and trams so you can transfer with complete peace of mind and visit both cities.

Tram Line 1 is the main one and runs through iconic spots such as the Guimerá Theater, Weyler Square or Trinidad Avenue. It is the line you want to take if you want to get from one city to another quickly and comfortably.

Line 2 connects two areas with a high population density; La Cuesta and Tíncer; if you stay in either, you can start on Line 2 and get off at the “El Cardonal” or “Hospital Universitario” stops to change to Line 1.

Also, at each Tram stop you find vending machines to recharge your transport passes. All info in detail on the MetroTenerife website.

Taxis in Tenerife

Finally, never rule out the option of travelling by Taxi in Tenerife. Our taxi drivers have lots of experience transporting travellers to any place on the island. If you ask them what to visit or where to eat they will share their local wisdom with you. Find out more about the Tenerife taxi network on our website.

And remember! During the trip, you can consult any questions you may have at any of the information offices or even with a passerby. Tenerife is very welcoming and you may even unexpectedly find a friend for life.

  1. If we have to board a bus via the rear door and use the machine to swipe the ten card, how do I indicate the fare is for two people.

  2. it still ok for tourists to spend a few nights in Puerto and then get the bus south to Adeje for a few nights during this 2 week lockdown.
