Arcadia Motion Pictures

In 2014 Tenerife Tourism Corporation assisted through its Tenerife Film Commission (TFC) a total of 68 national and international film productions, amounting to 8 million Euros spent on the Island: an increase of 400% the previous year, with revenue on 1.5 million Euros.

Of the 68 productions assisted in 2014, eight were feature films (five more than in 2013). The most notable were “Nobody wants the night”, directed by Isabel Coixet and counting with the participation of Juliette Binoche and Rinko Kikuchi and “Ma Ma”, by Julio Medem, starring Penélope Cruz and Luis Tosar; and “Felices 140”, by Gracia Querejeta, featuring Maribel Verdú and Antonio de La Torre. The list is completed by equally important films, such as “Tiempo sin aire”, “Playing Lecuona” or “Don’t grow up” (all are Spanish), the Russian “Mafia” and the German “Winterkartoffelknödel”.

In addition to the films, in last year’s balance the photo shoots stood out. There were 26, followed by TV programmes (17). Germany (21), United Kingdom (14) and Spain (10) top the ranking of productions. This meant a total of 454 days of shootings in 2014. The numbers of managed permits rose to 57, while the applications assisted were 205.

Along with the island’s qualities as a shooting set, Tenerife is providing post-production services through the HPC-Teide supercomputer, the second most powerful computer in Spain. Animation shootings are benefitting from it.

Balance since 2000

Since it started in 2000, Tenerife Film Commission (TFC) has assisted more than a thousand shootings (feature films and short films), photo shoots, music videos, television series, programmes and commercials. The economic balance is more than positive: 54 million Euros revenue, generated on the Island. It should be noted that 36 feature films have been shot in all of this time, notably films like “Clash of the Titans” and “Wrath of the Titans” (2010 – 2011, U.S.A.), “Una hora menos en Canarias” (2010, Spain), or “Fast & Furious 6” (2012, U.S.A.).

2015: a new panorama

Some productions in 2015 are taking advantage of the locations and benefits Tenerife offers to shootings. “Lazarus” feature film, by the Canarian Mateo Gil and with the presence of actors such as Oona Chaplin (Charles Chaplin’s granddaughter), or “Doctor Who”, a popular BBC TV series, are only two of them.

Attending to events and festivals is another strong point of Tenerife Film Commission. Events like Berlinale and Marché du Film in Cannes help to promote the island’s incentives on international film scene, and Cannes Lions, focused on commercials. Tenerife Film Commission will also try to determine how to attract animation and post-production industries.

Tenerife Film Commission

Tenerife Film Commission (TFC) is a department of Tenerife Tourism Corporation which was set up with the aim to encourage film production on the Island, by both foreign and mainland Spain production companies, and boost Tenerife film industry.
