People dressed in traditional costumes (many hand-woven and embroidered) accompany ox carts decorated with great attention to detail, distributing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webtenerife.co.uk\/tenerife\/gastronomy\/local-produce\/?tab=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">traditional delicacies<\/span><\/a> to all passers-by. Music in each corner, sounds created by unique instruments of the Canaries\u2026 Join us!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Origin of the pilgrimages in Tenerife<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The romer\u00edas arise from religious pilgrimages, made first to Rome (hence the term &#8220;romer\u00eda&#8221;). But then they brought it to each municipality making the pilgrimage towards the church or Saint.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In Tenerife, the oldest celebration not only of the Island but of the entire archipelago is the &#8220;Romer\u00eda del Socorro&#8221;. It is celebrated in the municipality G\u00fc\u00edmar in September and comes from the Guanche era. When the aborigines found the Virgin of Candelaria, the Mencey (King) Acaymo decided to carry the statue and had to ask for help, as it was not transportable because of its weight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.webtenerife.com\/elblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Baja-del-Socorro.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-4009\" src=\"http:\/\/www.webtenerife.com\/elblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Baja-del-Socorro-690x460.jpg\" alt=\"Romer\u00eda de Tenerife Socorro Guimar \" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Today the pilgrimages have evolved to be an effusive expression of the Canarian people. Ch\u00e1caras (percussion musical instrument), carts, traditional dresses and typical dishes mark the beat of any celebration, to which the locals usually decorate their balconies with elements and pennants.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Romer\u00edas in Tenerife of special tourist interest<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">On our island there are an infinity of pilgrimages, each with its own character and identity. However, some of our celebrations stand out and have been awarded the title &#8220;Fiestas of National Tourist Interest&#8221;. These are for example: the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webtenerife.co.uk\/what-to-do\/culture\/traditions\/fiestas+de+la+cruz.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">Fiesta de las Cruces<\/span><\/a> and Fuegos de Mayo in Los Realejos (although this is not a pilgrimage) and the Octava del Corpus and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webtenerife.co.uk\/what-to-do\/culture\/pilgrimages\/romeria-san-isidro-labrador-orotava.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">Romer\u00eda of San Isidro in La Orotava<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.webtenerife.com\/elblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Romeria-La-Orotava.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-4010\" src=\"http:\/\/www.webtenerife.com\/elblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Romeria-La-Orotava-690x459.jpg\" alt=\"Romeria La Orotava \" width=\"650\" height=\"432\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Other noteworthy romer\u00edas of the island are: the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webtenerife.co.uk\/what-to-do\/culture\/pilgrimages\/romeria-san-isidro-labrador-los-realejos.htm?_ga=2.73329427.1808251454.1556572001-13102587.1551441858\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">Romer\u00eda of San Isidro Labrador (in Los Realejos)<\/span><\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webtenerife.co.uk\/what-to-do\/culture\/pilgrimages\/romeria-san-agustin.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">Romer\u00eda of San Agust\u00edn<\/span><\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webtenerife.co.uk\/what-to-do\/culture\/pilgrimages\/romeria-san-roque.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">Romer\u00eda of San Roque<\/span><\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webtenerife.co.uk\/what-to-do\/culture\/pilgrimages\/romeria-san-benito.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">Romer\u00eda of San Benito Abad<\/span><\/a> and the Romer\u00eda of the district La Florida, which premiered this year the distinctive &#8220;Fiesta of Regional Tourist Interest&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Pilgrimage calendar of Tenerife 2019<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In May starts the romer\u00eda season on the island. Most of these festivals take place until September, although they are celebrated all year round. It is one of the most popular romer\u00edas in Tenerife. Thousands of locals and visitors come together to see the famous carts that populate the streets of Tegueste. Last year 80,000 people participated in the romer\u00eda.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.webtenerife.com\/elblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Romeria-San-Marcos.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-4011\" src=\"http:\/\/www.webtenerife.com\/elblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Romeria-San-Marcos-690x459.jpg\" alt=\"Romeria San Marcos \" width=\"650\" height=\"432\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Pilgrimage of San Isidro Labrador in Los Realejos<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Since the seventeenth century, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webtenerife.co.uk\/what-to-do\/culture\/pilgrimages\/romeria-san-isidro-labrador-los-realejos.htm?_ga=2.73329427.1808251454.1556572001-13102587.1551441858\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">this festival<\/span><\/a> is celebrated in the municipality of Los Realejos. Documents from 1676 confirm that the peasants worshiped the saintly figure of San Isidro Labrador. Nowadays, the event is a &#8220;Fiesta of National Tourist Interest&#8221; and a very special day for the locals. This year it will be celebrated on June 2nd from 12:00 pm in the Parich of the Apostle Santiago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.webtenerife.com\/elblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/romeria-san-isidro-labrador.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-4012\" src=\"http:\/\/www.webtenerife.com\/elblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/romeria-san-isidro-labrador-690x477.jpg\" alt=\"Romeria San Isidro Labrador\" width=\"650\" height=\"449\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Pilgrimage of San Isidro in La Orotava<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">84 carts crowned one of Tenerife&#8217;s most multitudinous pilgrimages last year. This year, the &#8220;Fiesta of National Tourist Interest&#8221; will also be celebrated on June 30th. In addition, it celebrates 83 years of history paying homage to San Isidro Labrador and Santa Mar\u00eda de la Cabeza.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.webtenerife.com\/elblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Romeria-San-Isidro-Tenerife.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-4013\" src=\"http:\/\/www.webtenerife.com\/elblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Romeria-San-Isidro-Tenerife-690x459.jpg\" alt=\"Romeria San Isidro Tenerife\" width=\"650\" height=\"432\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Pilgrimage of San Benito Abad in La Laguna<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">On July 14th, one of the most important festivals will take place in the municipality of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webtenerife.co.uk\/tenerife\/the-island\/municipalities\/laguna\/?tab=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">UNESCO World Heritage Site<\/span><\/a>: the pilgrimage of San Benito Abad in La Laguna. Around 43,000 people gathered at this popular celebration last year.
