A period in which 1,647 productions have been dealt with, reflecting the importance of the work carried out in promoting the island as a film set, and in which the strategic boost to the local audiovisual sector stands out. The publication is now available, in English and Spanish through the link: https://20years.tenerifefilm.com/

The Councillor for Territorial Planning, Historical Heritage and Tourism of the Island Council José Gregorio Martín Plata, stated that “the TFC has enabled the island to position itself as an international benchmark for hosting all kinds of audiovisual productions” and highlights “the commitment of the companies that have decided to set up on the island to work in the sector and from where many have achieved success”. He assures that “the film industry is already a branch in the development of our economy that, we are convinced, will continue to grow in the coming years”.

The CEO of Tourism of Tenerife, David Pérez, stated ” we wanted to celebrate this landmark in a special way and, taking into account the difficulties currently involved in holding any type of event, we decided that the right thing to do was to bring together in a single digital and attractive publication, a journey through the history of the Film Commission: from its genesis and the role of the technicians who have made it possible; to the elements that make the island such an attractive place to film: from its diversity of landscapes to its tax incentives, including a complete network of local companies and professionals in the sector”.

The publication also provides an overview of some of the main productions hosted on the island in recent years, devoting a special section to TFC’s firm commitment to sustainable filmmaking, and also to Spanish productions and Tenerife’s talent, as well as references to the commercials and series that have used the island to produce them. It also dedicates an interview to the renowned island director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, and the independent filmmaker Miguel Ángel Mejías. The boom experienced by animation shoots through the Isla Cartoon brand also has a place in this digital magazine.

Tenerife Film Commission

The TFC was created within the Cabildo in March 2000 with the aim of facilitating audiovisual productions on the island by obtaining locations for filming, as well as providing assistance in completing the necessary procedures. Furthermore, the organization has attended the main national and international film events with the aim of promoting the image of Tenerife in order to attract film shoots. Its management model included the figure of the companies associated with the Film Commission, which facilitated direct interaction with local production companies and businesses from the outset, a key aspect in the success achieved by the island in this field over the last 20 years.

Among the elements, in addition to the aforementioned, that have positively influenced the development of the island as a set, are the attractive tax incentives – especially beneficial compared to the rest of the national and European territory -, an unparalleled institutional synergy between the islands and the regional government, and a great variety of landscapes in a relatively small space.

Feature Films

Some of the productions the island has played host to during this period are 81 feature films, including Hollywood productions Wrath of the Titans and Clash of the Titans, Fast & Furious 6, Jason Bourne, Rambo V: The Last Blood or Wonder Woman 1984, featuring stars like Sam Worthington, Ralph Phiennes, Liam Neeson, Paul Walker, Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Matt Damon, Tommy Lee Jones or Sylvester Stallone.

Shooting ‘Jason Bourne’. It was the first of the companies to come to Tenerife attracted by the tax breaks and quality of life, although the island already had major animation companies like La Casa Animada. Four years later there are now seven companies based on the island that employ nearly 300 people. Landmarks in this kind of films include the partial production of Tadeo Jones 2: The Secret of King Midas, which used the HPC Teide supercomputer to render the feature film. The soundtrack of Capture the Flag was composed on the island and it was also partially produced here. In addition, three seasons of La Casa Animada’s series Cleo (an in-house production for Clan TV), TV series Momonster, plus services for international productions like Treasure Trekker or Emmy and Gooroo.

To further reinforce the island as a leading place for this kind of productions, in 2018 Turismo de Tenerife and the Cabildo organized the first Ibero-American Animation Quirino Awards.
