A total of 24 works will compete in the 9 categories of these awards created to promote and value Ibero-American animation. Spain tops the list of finalists with 11 titles, followed by Mexico and Argentina with 6, Chile and Brazil with 4, Colombia &amp; Portugal with 3 and Costa Rica with 1. The debuts occupy a prominent place in the selection, reflecting the dynamism and commitment to new talents in animation from the 23 countries that make up the Ibero-American region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The winners will be announced on <strong>May 29th<\/strong> at a ceremony in the city of La Laguna, Tenerife, the new venue for these awards sponsored by the <strong>Cabildo de Tenerife through the Tenerife Film Commission<\/strong>. In addition, the ceremony will pay tribute to the Cuban cartoonist and animation film director Juan Padr\u00f3n, creator of Ibero-American animation classics such as &#8220;Elpidio Vald\u00e9s&#8221; and &#8221; Vampires in Havana\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"IBERO-AMERICAN ANIMATION QUIRINO AWARDS\u2019 FINALISTS 2021\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/DKVB6nLBZqk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption>Quirino Awards&#8217; Finalists 2021<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Spanish short film <strong>\u201cWayback\u201d<\/strong> is the work with the most nominations (3); followed by the Chilean feature film <strong>&#8220;Nahuel and the Magic Book&#8221;<\/strong> co-production with Brazil; the Portuguese short film <strong>\u201cTie\u201d<\/strong> and the Spanish short film <strong>\u201cHomeless Home\u201d<\/strong>, both co-produced with France; and the Chilean series <strong>\u201cPetit Season 2\u201d<\/strong>, co-production with Argentina and Colombia, with two nominations each.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With three selected works, Mexican animation leads the category of <strong>Best Feature Film<\/strong> with <strong>\u201cXico\u2019s Journey\u201d<\/strong> by Eric Cabello D\u00edaz, <strong>\u201cCranston Academy; Monster Zone\u201d<\/strong> by Leopoldo Aguilar and <strong>\u201cA Costume for Nicholas\u201d<\/strong> by Eduardo Rivero. This category is completed with the Chilean <strong>&#8220;Nahuel and the Magic Book&#8221;<\/strong>, the debut of Germ\u00e1n Acu\u00f1a Delgadillo and selected in the official competition of Annecy 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The series for family audiences monopolize the category of <strong>Best Series<\/strong>, in which compete the Spanish <strong>&#8220;I, Elvis Riboldi&#8221;<\/strong>, directed by Javier Gal\u00e1n and Rapha\u00ebl Lamarque, which has been distributed in more than 130 territories, and <strong>&#8220;The Zurfs&#8221;<\/strong>, directed by Alex Cervantes. The Chilean <strong>\u201cPetit Season 2\u201d<\/strong> by Bernardita Ojeda, who is once again a candidate after being a finalist in 2019 with the first season of this same series, and the Brazilian <strong>\u201cCount On Me\u201d<\/strong>, a series for preschoolers directed by Andr\u00e9s Lieban and Alessandro Monnerat, complete the selection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"690\" height=\"438\" src=\"http:\/\/www.webtenerife.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Foto-Grupo-Premios-Quirino-1-768x487-1-690x438.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3741\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.webtenerife.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Foto-Grupo-Premios-Quirino-1-768x487-1-690x438.jpg 690w, https:\/\/www.webtenerife.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Foto-Grupo-Premios-Quirino-1-768x487-1-300x190.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.webtenerife.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Foto-Grupo-Premios-Quirino-1-768x487-1-87x55.jpg 87w, https:\/\/www.webtenerife.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Foto-Grupo-Premios-Quirino-1-768x487-1.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 690px) 100vw, 690px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In the category of <strong>Best Short Film<\/strong>, the animation of the Iberian Peninsula monopolizes the nominations with the Spanish <strong>\u201cHomeless Home\u201d<\/strong> by Alberto V\u00e1zquez, which was awarded in the last edition of Annecy and in 2018 received the award in this same category with his short film \u201cDecorado\u201d, and <strong>\u201cRoberto\u201d<\/strong>, debut of the director and producer Carmen C\u00f3rdoba Gonz\u00e1lez. The shortlist is completed with the solo debut of the Portuguese director Alexandra Ramires, <strong>\u201cTie\u201d<\/strong>, who has participated in around 40 international festivals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, two of the three finalists in the category for <strong>Best Animation School Short Film<\/strong> have been made at the prestigious Gobelins school in France: <strong>\u201cLa Bestia\u201d<\/strong>, co-directed by the Mexican Ram Tamez, and <strong>\u201cThe Return of the Waves\u201d<\/strong>, co-directed by the Mexican Alejandra Guevara Cervera and the Portuguese Francisco Moutinho de Magalh\u00e3es, among others. Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999, La Laguna is one of the island&#8217;s references in cultural matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the awards ceremony, which will be held at the emblematic Leal Theater, the Quirino Awards will once again bring together animation professionals at the Ibero-American Co-production and Business Forum, which will take place between May 27th and 29th. In 2020, this industry activity brought together representatives from a hundred companies from 19 countries &#8211; including production companies, sales agencies, tv channels and distributors &#8211; who held more than 800 B2B meetings. Entries to participate in the forum will open shortly on the Awards website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The press conference counted with the participation of Jos\u00e9 Gregorio Mart\u00edn Plata, Councilor for Territorial Planning, Historical Heritage and Tourism of the Cabildo de Tenerife; Beatriz Navas, Director of the ICAA, Institute of Cinematography and Audiovisual Arts; Jorge Alvar, Director of Infrastructure, Health and ICT at ICEX; Luis Yeray Guti\u00e9rrez, Mayor of San Crist\u00f3bal de La Laguna; Elena Vilardell, Technical and Executive Secretary of the Ibermedia Program; and Jose Luis Farias, Director of the Quirino Awards, as well as representatives from the embassies of Argentina, Brazil, Costa Rica, Mexico and Portugal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>About the Quirino Awards<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The awards are named after the creator of the first animated feature film in history, the Italian-Argentine Quirino Cristiani, who in 1917 directed &#8220;El Apostol&#8221;; an Argentine production in which 58,000 drawings made by hand and shot in 35 mm were used, in addition to several models representing public buildings and the streets of the city of Buenos Aires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Quirino Awards, which have the main sponsorship of the Cabildo de Tenerife through the Tenerife Film Commission, reflect the determined commitment that for years has been made to animation in the island. This commitment also materializes in concrete actions to support the flourishing local industry, assistance to the main international markets and the promotion of the &#8220;Tenerife Isla Cartoon&#8221; brand, specific to this sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The initiative has the sponsorship of ICEX Spain Trade and Investment, San Crist\u00f3bal de La Laguna City Hall, Canary Islands Fillm and PROEXCA; the collaboration of ICAA, Ibermedia Program, RTVE, Tangram Solutions, WELAW, Embassy of Portugal and Casa de Am\u00e9rica; and the support of DIBOOS, SAVE, Pixelatl, Animation!
