Photography by Manuel Roman Sierra<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The leading European content companies are increasingly and decidedly more committed to filming their new productions on the Canary Island of Tenerife, driving an industry to recover its full potential in the post-pandemic era.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The main driver of this growth is undoubtedly the explosion in the consumption of fiction series through SVOD platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Accordingly, one of the most ambitious companies in the field of the production and distribution of audio-visual content in Spanish &#8211; <strong>Buend\u00eda Estudios<\/strong> \u2013 is filming the series<em> Las noches de Tef\u00eda<\/em> from 25 April to 10 June, produced through its new subsidiary <strong>Buend\u00eda Estudios Canarias<\/strong>, with the participation of <strong>Atresmedia Televisi\u00f3n<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>\u00a0<br>Created by the playwright Miguel del Arco, the scriptwriter along with Antonio Rojano and co-director with R\u00f3mulo Aguillaume,\u00a0<em>Las noches de Tef\u00eda<\/em>\u00a0tells the story of a concentration camp &#8211; Colonia Agr\u00edcola Penitenciaria de Tef\u00eda \u2013 located in a setting in Fuerteventura, where, between 1954 and 1966, those convicted under the Vagrancy Act were sent by the Franco regime, which was amended in 1954 to include homosexuals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"690\" height=\"460\" src=\"http:\/\/www.webtenerife.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/WhatsApp-Image-2022-06-07-at-3.58.53-PM-690x460.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3876\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.webtenerife.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/WhatsApp-Image-2022-06-07-at-3.58.53-PM-690x460.jpeg 690w, https:\/\/www.webtenerife.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/WhatsApp-Image-2022-06-07-at-3.58.53-PM-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.webtenerife.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/WhatsApp-Image-2022-06-07-at-3.58.53-PM-768x512.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.webtenerife.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/WhatsApp-Image-2022-06-07-at-3.58.53-PM-83x55.jpeg 83w, https:\/\/www.webtenerife.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/WhatsApp-Image-2022-06-07-at-3.58.53-PM-1536x1023.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/www.webtenerife.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/WhatsApp-Image-2022-06-07-at-3.58.53-PM-600x400.jpeg 600w, https:\/\/www.webtenerife.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/WhatsApp-Image-2022-06-07-at-3.58.53-PM-75x50.jpeg 75w, https:\/\/www.webtenerife.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/WhatsApp-Image-2022-06-07-at-3.58.53-PM.jpeg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 690px) 100vw, 690px\" \/><figcaption>Cast of Canarian actors in &#8216;Las noche de Tef\u00eda&#8217;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The main location of the series is the village of Abades in Tenerife, home to a former leper colony, where the first season of Tef\u00eda was recreated. A port and a church have also been recreated in the municipality of Arico, which Abades forms part of. The production will complete its journey through Tenerife in such locations as El Sauzal, Santa Cruz de Tenerife and San Andr\u00e9s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBasically, we are trying to recreate Fuerteventura. By finding such a location as the Abades Leper Colony has meant that we have looked for all the locations to film on the island of Tenerife, which are wonderful and very <em>ad hoc<\/em> for the story\u201d, explains the Production Director, Marta Mir\u00f3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe main advantage of filming in Tenerife is the tax breaks, the tremendous variety of settings, along with a wonderful technical team\u201d, stresses Mir\u00f3, winner of the Goya Prize for the best Production Management for her work on <em>Nadie quiere la noche<\/em>, by Isabel Coixet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some 20 actors from the Canary Islands have participated in the filming of <em>Las noches de Tef\u00eda<\/em>, supported by services from companies from Tenerife like <strong>Gomeralia <\/strong>(catering), <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webtenerife.co.uk\/tenerifefilm\/professional-directory\/car-hire\/jocar.htm\">Jocar <\/a><\/strong>(vans), <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webtenerife.co.uk\/tenerifefilm\/professional-directory\/production-services\/blackstone+pictures.htm\">Blackstone Film Company<\/a> <\/strong>(lighting material), <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webtenerife.co.uk\/tenerifefilm\/professional-directory\/audiovisual-equipment-rental\/the-boss.htm\">The Boss<\/a> <\/strong>(production vehicles and furniture), <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webtenerife.co.uk\/tenerifefilm\/professional-directory\/actors\/bewateragency.htm\">Bewateragency<\/a><\/strong> (artistic representation)\u00a0and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webtenerife.co.uk\/tenerifefilm\/professional-directory\/car-hire\/canary-pictures-vehicles.htm\">Canary Pictures Vehicles<\/a> <\/strong>(camera and production cars).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This film-shoot also marks the start of the activity of Buend\u00eda Estudios Canarias, a subsidiary of the joint venture launched in 2020 by Atresmedia and the pay TV market leader Movistar Plus.<br><br><strong>The return of\u00a0<em>Balko<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><br>Out of the total of 190 productions filmed on the island last year, 48 were from Germany. The generous tax breaks also made it possible to finance filming aboard\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Entitled<em> Balko<\/em>&nbsp;<em>Tenerife \u2013 Wolfe, Forest and Wilderness<\/em> &#8211; the production returned to Santa Cruz de Tenerife in April and May, backed by support from the Tenerife Film Commission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAlthough it is a small island, the infrastructure to film a production, from the rental accommodation to the teams, is fantastic. Everyone speaks fluent English, which greatly helps with communication\u201d, she indicates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The German actors Jochen Horst and Ludger Pistor star in this action and comedy series commissioned to UFA Fiction by the platform RTL Plus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A subsidiary of&nbsp;<strong>Fremantle&nbsp;<\/strong>\u2013 part of the European giant&nbsp;<strong>RTL Group <\/strong>&#8211; UFA Fiction is also responsible for such successful productions as the series&nbsp;<em>Deutschland 83<\/em>&nbsp;and the film&nbsp;<em>El m\u00e9dico<\/em>.<br><br><strong><em>The Head 2<\/em><\/strong><strong>, on a cargo ship<\/strong><br><br><strong>The Mediapro Studio<\/strong>&nbsp;is on the verge of starting filming the second season of<em> The Head<\/em> in Tenerife \u2013 an international franchise. The first season, also filmed on the island, was co-produced by <strong>Hulu Japan<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>HBO Asia<\/strong>.<br><br><em>The Head 2<\/em>&nbsp;again features Jorge Dorado (<em>El Embarcadero<\/em>) as the Director of all its episodes and Ran Tellem as the Development Director. The scriptwriters Mariano Baselga and Jordi Galcer\u00e1n have also joined the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For this second season, the creation, production and content distribution factory of <strong>Grupo Mediapro<\/strong>&nbsp;will use an isolated and inaccessible location as the main setting. In this case, it will be a huge cargo ship that sails on a scientific mission in mid-ocean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For The Mediapro Studio,&nbsp;<em>The Head<\/em>&nbsp;has been a key title in its international strategy. Filmed in English, the first season has been distributed and premiered in 90 countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another recent film shoot by the Spanish company in Tenerife was the comedy <em>Reyes vs. Santa<\/em>, directed by Paco Caballero (<em>Amor de madre<\/em>) and produced by\u00a0<strong>Morena Films<\/strong>, with the participation of\u00a0<strong>Prime Video<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>RTVE<\/strong>. The film also included film locations in Toledo, Madrid and Segovia.<br><br>\u00a0<br><strong>North American producers<\/strong><br><br>On the North American side, <strong>Skydance TV <\/strong>and<strong> Amazon Studios <\/strong>have maintained a busy production schedule on the island, which began last year with the filming of the first season of the science fiction series <em>Foundation<\/em>, produced together with <strong>Paramount TV<\/strong> for <strong>Apple TV Plus<\/strong>, which included the services of the Canary Island company <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webtenerife.co.uk\/tenerifefilm\/professional-directory\/production-services\/sur+film+production+and+services.htm\">Sur Film<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the start of the year, this great Hollywood production returned to&nbsp;<strong>Tenerife<\/strong> to film its second season, which lasted for 19 days of work in different futuristic urban locations like the <strong>Tenerife Auditorium <\/strong>in the capital, the church of <strong>Sant\u00edsimo Redentor<\/strong>&nbsp;in La Laguna and other locations, including Puerto de la Cruz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A new season of the series<em> Jack Ryan, by Tom Clancy <\/em>has also been filmed recently, a successful production that also included the involvement of Skydance TV and Amazon, and the collaboration of the Canary Island company <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webtenerife.co.uk\/tenerifefilm\/professional-directory\/audiovisual-equipment-rental\/seven+islands+film.htm\">Seven Islands Film<\/a><\/strong>.North American producers highly value the importance of the tax breaks, along with the variety and proximity of the locations offered by the island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More information about the audiovisual activity on the Island in the Tenerife Film Commission: https:\/\/www.webtenerife.co.uk\/tenerifefilm\/ <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The leading European content companies are increasingly and decidedly more committed to filming their new productions on the Canary Island of Tenerife, driving an industry to recover its full potential in the post-pandemic era.
