A total of 25 works from seven countries will compete in the seventh edition of the Ibero-American Animation Quirino Awards<\/strong>, created to promote, and enhance the value of animation from the Ibero-American region. Spain tops the list of countries with the most entries (16), followed by Brazil (7) and Chile (3). Argentina, Mexico, and Portugal are present with two nominations each, while Colombia has one nomination. The announcement of the finalists in the 10 categories of the Awards was made today, within the framework of the 27th<\/sup> Malaga Film Festival. The Quirino Awards have the main sponsorship of the Tenerife Council through Turismo de Tenerife.

Spain\u2019s \u201cRobot Dreams\u201d by Pablo Berger \u2013 also competing for an Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film \u2013 and the Brazilian short \u201cLulina e a Lua\u201d by Marcus Vinicius Vasconcelos and Alois Di Leo are the works with the most nominations, three each.

A jury made up of directors Jos\u00e9 Miguel Ribeiro (Portugal), Marcela Rinc\u00f3n (Colombia) and Wesley Louis (United Kingdom), along with Zane Valeniece (Head of Acquisitions for the Latvian public television, LTV) and Emmanu\u00e8le Petry (co-founder and producer at Dandelooo, France), will be in charge of selecting the winners, which will be announced on May 11th<\/sup> at the Leal Theater in San Crist\u00f3bal de La Laguna, on the island of Tenerife.

The presentation of the finalists took place as part of the activities of the Animation HUB of Spanish Screenings in MAFIZ – Industry Area at the Malaga Festival (at the International University of Andalusia, former Institute of Port Studies of Malaga) and was attended by Lope Afonso, Vice President of the Tenerife Council and Secretary of Tourism, External Action and International Relations, and Carmen Jord\u00e1n, Director of Fashion, Habitat and Cultural Industries of ICEX; Camilo V\u00e1zquez, Deputy Director General of Promotion and International Relations of the ICAA; Annabelle Aramburu, Coordinator of MAFIZ – Industry Area at the Malaga Festival, and Bea Bartolom\u00e9, Director of the Quirino Awards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finalists by category<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spanish animation has the most nominations in the Best Feature Film<\/strong> category with three out of four nominations. Aimed at children, \u201cHanna and the Monsters\u201d<\/strong> is the first feature film by Galician director Lorena Ares, an adventure film starring Hanna, an adorable little girl who loves monsters. Another nominee is Isabel Herguera, also a debutant, with \u201cSultana\u2019s Dream,\u201d<\/strong> a film inspired by the feminist science fiction story of the same name written in 1905, which became the first European animated film to compete in the Official Selection of the San Sebastian Festival. Completing the Spanish participation in this category is \u201cRobot Dreams,\u201d<\/strong> the fourth feature film by Bilbao-born Pablo Berger and his first animation work. An adaptation of the 2007 graphic novel of the same name by illustrator Sara Varon, the film has already won two Goyas and an Annie and is a finalist for the Oscar for Best Animated Feature. Argentina\u2019s \u201cThe Paradise\u201d<\/strong> by Fernando Sirianni and Federico Moreno Breser, a film noir based on true events, is the fourth nominee for Best Feature Film.

The nominations in the Best Series<\/strong> category \u2013 all developed in 2D animation \u2013 are shared between Spain and Brazil. After winning in the same category with \u201cJasmine & Jambo,\u201d <\/strong>Catalan director S\u00edlvia Cort\u00e9s returns with the second season of this musical series aimed at preschoolers. \u201cPoor Devil\u201d,<\/strong> an animated series for adults created by Joaqu\u00edn Reyes, Miguel Esteban, and Ernesto Sevilla, and \u201cSex Symbols\u201d,<\/strong> a series that addresses the sex and emotional education of children and adolescents directed by Paloma Mora I\u00f1esta and Alex Cervantes, complete the Spanish nominations. Along with them, two Brazilian series compete for the award in this category: \u201cThe Wild Hotel of Ana Flor\u201d<\/strong> by Andr\u00e9s Lieban and Alessandro Monnerat, a pair that competed in 2021 in this same section with \u201cConta conmigo\u201d, and \u201cThe Nutty Boy\u2019 – Season 2,\u201d <\/strong>an adaptation of the well-known cartoon by Brazilian cartoonist Ziraldo directed by Michele Massagli and Beto Gomez.
