Spain tops the list of countries with the most entries (16), followed by Brazil (7) and Chile (3). Argentina, Mexico, and Portugal are present with two nominations each, while Colombia has one nomination. The announcement of the finalists in the 10 categories of the Awards was made today, within the framework of the 27<sup>th<\/sup> Malaga Film Festival. The Quirino Awards have the main sponsorship of the Tenerife Council through Turismo de Tenerife.<br>\u00a0<br>Spain\u2019s \u201cRobot Dreams\u201d by Pablo Berger \u2013 also competing for an Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film \u2013 and the Brazilian short \u201cLulina e a Lua\u201d by Marcus Vinicius Vasconcelos and Alois Di Leo are the works with the most nominations, three each.<br>\u00a0<br>A jury made up of directors Jos\u00e9 Miguel Ribeiro (Portugal), Marcela Rinc\u00f3n (Colombia) and Wesley Louis (United Kingdom), along with Zane Valeniece (Head of Acquisitions for the Latvian public television, LTV) and Emmanu\u00e8le Petry (co-founder and producer at Dandelooo, France), will be in charge of selecting the winners, which will be announced on May 11<sup>th<\/sup> at the Leal Theater in San Crist\u00f3bal de La Laguna, on the island of Tenerife.<br>\u00a0<br>The presentation of the finalists took place as part of the activities of the Animation HUB of Spanish Screenings in MAFIZ &#8211; Industry Area at the Malaga Festival (at the International University of Andalusia, former Institute of Port Studies of Malaga) and was attended by Lope Afonso, Vice President of the Tenerife Council and Secretary of Tourism, External Action and International Relations, and Carmen Jord\u00e1n, Director of Fashion, Habitat and Cultural Industries of ICEX; Camilo V\u00e1zquez, Deputy Director General of Promotion and International Relations of the ICAA; Annabelle Aramburu, Coordinator of MAFIZ &#8211; Industry Area at the Malaga Festival, and Bea Bartolom\u00e9, Director of the Quirino Awards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Finalists by category<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Spanish animation has the most nominations in the <strong>Best Feature Film<\/strong> category with three out of four nominations. Aimed at children, <strong>\u201cHanna and the Monsters\u201d<\/strong> is the first feature film by Galician director Lorena Ares, an adventure film starring Hanna, an adorable little girl who loves monsters. Another nominee is Isabel Herguera, also a debutant, with <strong>\u201cSultana\u2019s Dream,\u201d<\/strong> a film inspired by the feminist science fiction story of the same name written in 1905, which became the first European animated film to compete in the Official Selection of the San Sebastian Festival. Completing the Spanish participation in this category is <strong>\u201cRobot Dreams,\u201d<\/strong> the fourth feature film by Bilbao-born Pablo Berger and his first animation work. An adaptation of the 2007 graphic novel of the same name by illustrator Sara Varon, the film has already won two Goyas and an Annie and is a finalist for the Oscar for Best Animated Feature. Argentina\u2019s <strong>\u201cThe Paradise\u201d<\/strong> by Fernando Sirianni and Federico Moreno Breser, a film noir based on true events, is the fourth nominee for Best Feature Film.<br>\u00a0<br>The nominations in the <strong>Best Series<\/strong> category \u2013 all developed in 2D animation \u2013 are shared between Spain and Brazil. After winning in the same category with <strong>\u201cJasmine &amp; Jambo,\u201d <\/strong>Catalan director S\u00edlvia Cort\u00e9s returns with the second season of this musical series aimed at preschoolers. <strong>\u201cPoor Devil\u201d,<\/strong> an animated series for adults created by Joaqu\u00edn Reyes, Miguel Esteban, and Ernesto Sevilla, and <strong>\u201cSex Symbols\u201d,<\/strong> a series that addresses the sex and emotional education of children and adolescents directed by Paloma Mora I\u00f1esta and Alex Cervantes, complete the Spanish nominations. Along with them, two Brazilian series compete for the award in this category: <strong>\u201cThe Wild Hotel of Ana Flor\u201d<\/strong> by Andr\u00e9s Lieban and Alessandro Monnerat, a pair that competed in 2021 in this same section with \u201cConta conmigo\u201d, and <strong>\u201cThe Nutty Boy\u2019 &#8211; Season 2,\u201d <\/strong>an adaptation of the well-known cartoon by Brazilian cartoonist Ziraldo directed by Michele Massagli and Beto Gomez.<br>\u00a0<br>For the first time since their creation, the Quirino Awards achieved gender parity in their two main categories: Feature Film and Animated Series.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video controls src=\"https:\/\/premiosquirino.us16.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=21872062f709941ebdf058296&amp;id=b6948efb3a&amp;e=27c7e7ff0e\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Marcus Vinicius Vasconcelos and Alois Di Leo from Brazil will compete for the <strong>Best Short Film<\/strong> award with their piece <strong>\u201cLulina and the Moon\u201d<\/strong> selected in competition at the prestigious Clermont-Ferrand festival. Di Leo returns to the Quirino Awards after winning two prizes in 2021 with his short \u201cCaminho dos Gigantes.\u201d From Portugal comes <strong>\u201cAlmost Forgotten\u201d<\/strong> by Miguel Lima and Dimitrije Mihajlovic, which, through different animation techniques, tells the story of a woman who wanders through the memories of her childhood. Completing the list of finalists is <strong>\u201cTo Bird or Not to Bird,\u201d<\/strong> in which Galician illustrator, comic author and director Mart\u00edn Romero offers a critical and kaleidoscopic view of today\u2019s world through the experiences of birds.<br>\u00a0<br>In the newly created <strong>Best Animation Music Video<\/strong> category, three works are competing that confirm the ability of Ibero-American animation to transcend its own borders. <strong>\u201cAll the Best\u201d<\/strong> is a music video by Pablo Rold\u00e1n for Siam\u00e9s, an Argentine electropop band; <strong>\u201cIt\u2019s Up to the Future\u201d<\/strong> is a song by poet and musician Reynaldo Bessa animated by Brazilian illustrator and animator Nat Grego. Finally, <strong>\u201cI Inside the Old I Dying\u201d <\/strong>by Chilean directors Crist\u00f3bal Le\u00f3n and Joaqu\u00edn Coci\u00f1a (\u201cLa Casa Lobo\u201d, \u201cLos Huesos\u201d) brings to life a song from the latest album by English artist PJ Harvey.<br>\u00a0<br>In addition to the above-mentioned, awards will also be given in the categories of <strong>Best Animation School Short Film<\/strong>,<strong> Best Commissioned Animation<\/strong>,<strong> Best Video Game Animation<\/strong>, and in three technical categories: <strong>Best Visual Development<\/strong>,<strong> Best Animation Design<\/strong>, and<strong> Best Sound Design and Original Music.<\/strong><br>\u00a0<br>The complete list of finalists can be seen <a href=\"https:\/\/premiosquirino.us16.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=21872062f709941ebdf058296&amp;id=df840a000c&amp;e=27c7e7ff0e\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>About the Quirino Awards<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Awards were named after Quirino Cristiani, creator of the first animated feature film in history, an Argentine production titled \u201cEl Ap\u00f3stol\u201d (1917) in which 58,000 drawings made by hand and shot in 35 mm were used.<br>\u00a0<br>The Quirino Awards have the main sponsorship of the Tenerife Council through Turismo de Tenerife and the Tenerife Film Commission; the sponsorship of the City Council of San Crist\u00f3bal de La Laguna, ICEX Spain Export and Investment and ICAA; the collaboration of CAACI, the Ibermedia Program, Acci\u00f3n Cultural Espa\u00f1ola through the Program for Internationalization of Spanish Culture (PICE), OEI, RTVE, UHY Fay &amp; Co, La Liga de la Animaci\u00f3n Iberoamericana (The Ibero-American Animation League), Retina Latina, Filmin, Multicines Tenerife, Paraninfo ULL, the Malaga Film Festival and Culturaman\u00eda; and the support of DIBOOS, SAVE, Pixelatl, Animation!
