Spain\u2019s &#8216;Mariposas Negras&#8217;m by David Baute won Best Feature Film, while Brazil\u2019s &#8216;Jorel&#8217;s Brother&#8217; took home Best Series, and Uruguay\u2019s &#8216;Capybaras&#8217;, by Alfredo Soderguit claimed Best Short Film. The awards gala took place today in La Laguna, Tenerife, and was streamed online worldwide. The Quirino Awards are sponsored by the Tenerife Council through Tenerife Tourism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With a strong background in documentary filmmaking, Tenerife-born director<strong> David Baute<\/strong> makes his animation debut with \u201cMariposas Negras,\u201d a feature film that follows three women from very different parts of the world that are forced to migrate due to the climate crisis. The film draws from Baute\u2019s 2020 documentary \u201c\u00c9xodo clim\u00e1tico\u201d and has also been honored at the Goya and Platino Awards. Co-written by Baute and Yaiza Berrocal, the Quirino\u2019s Best Feature Film is a production by Spain\u2019s Ikiru Films and Tinglado Film (based in Tenerife), alongside Panama\u2019s Anangu Grup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After winning Best Series at the <strong>2019 Quirino Awards, Brazil\u2019s &#8216;Jorel&#8217;s Brother&#8217; <\/strong>was again recognized for its fifth season. Created by Juliano Enrico and produced by the Rio de Janeiro-based Copa Studio together with Warner Bros. Discovery, the series is about an extremely creative boy navigating pre-adolescence in the shadow of his older brother Jorel\u2019s popularity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In &#8216;Capybaras&#8217;, winner of the Quirino Award for Best Short Film, Uruguayan writer and director Alfredo Soderguit talks about prejudice and friendship through a story starring a family of capybaras forced to leave their habitat because of hunters. The work is an adaptation of the book of the same name written and illustrated by the director, known in the world of animation for \u201cAnina\u201d (2013) and for the series \u00a1Dos pajaritos&#8217;, finalist in the 2022 Quirino Awards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The award for Best School Short Film went to<strong> &#8216;Adi\u00f3s&#8217; by Jos\u00e9 Prats,<\/strong> a Spanish director and graduate of the National Film and Television School in England, while in the Best Animated Music Video category, the award went to \u201cMy Way\u201d, a production by Argentina\u2019s Rudo Company directed by Jesica Bianchi for the band Siam\u00e9s. Finally, the award for Best Animation Commissioned Film went to the Brazilian \u201c47\u201d, directed by Paulo Garcia and Natalia Gouvea and produced by Zombie Studio, which also received the award for Best Visual Development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rounding out the awards, Spain\u2019s &#8216;Neva&#8217; (Nomada Studio) claimed Best Video Game Animation, while Spain-France co-production \u201cBuffet Para\u00edso\u201d by Santi Am\u00e9zqueta and H\u00e9ctor Zafra won Best Animation Design. The short \u201cGilbert\u201d (Spain) by Alejandro Salue\u00f1a Garc\u00eda, Arturo Lacal Ruiz, and Jordi Jim\u00e9nez Xiberta earned Best Sound Design and Original Music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year\u2019s jury was made up of U.S. producer Ben Kalina of Titmouse studio, Spanish researcher and programmer Carolina L\u00f3pez Caballero, children\u2019s content acquisitions executive at Swedish public broadcaster SVT Helena Nylander, Brazilian animation director, screenwriter and animator Daniel Bruson, and CEO of French distributor and producer Prime Entertainment Group Leyla Formoso.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>26 finalists were chosen from 263 entries,<\/strong> 10 percent more than the previous year. After a process of analysis and listening to the sector, Tenerife will host the evolution of the original concept of the Quirino Residency, presented last year; a project that now incorporates the promotion of collective work and adds the contributions that have emerged from the successful Futures Lab held in this edition of the Quirino Awards,\u201d he said. This new space has the support of the Tenerife Council through Tenerife Tourism and the Tenerife Film Commission. Production: Agencia Freak (Spain).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>About the Quirino Awards<\/strong><br>The awards are named after Quirino Cristiani, the creator of the first animated feature film in history: an Argentine production called \u201cEl ap\u00f3stol\u201d (1917), which used 58,000 hand-drawn images shot on 35mm film.
