Taking as its theme The World of the Circus this year, Puerto de la Cruz stages its annual Carnival on the town’s streets between 19 February and 5 March. Designated an event of international tourism interest, the Puerto de la Cruz Carnival is one of the most popular in Tenerife. Important highlights include the Burial of the Sardine (Ash Wednesday), the closing Coso parade - which takes place the following Saturday and features numerous spontaneous groups, floats, dancing troupes, satirical singers, and Carnival delegations from other countries - and the Men’s High-Heels Race, an amusing and fun-filled obstacle race which sees hundreds of men in fancy dress don footwear with heels of at least 8cm and run along the cobbled streets.
