Descent of the Beech Trees 2019

A traditional event in La Guancha, the Descent of the Beech Trees is part of Our Lady of Hope’s Festival every year. Hundreds of locals wearing folk costumes go into the woods to pick beech branches. They bring them back to town to decorate the streets for the procession honouring Our Lady of Hope.

This tradition has its roots in the old days, when the peasants who owned beasts of burden went into the woods to collect beech branches for the festival that unfolded in the town streets and square.
