A comic adaptation of Umberto Eco’s novel The Name of the Rose is being staged by theatre quartet Abubukaka at the Adeje Auditorium. The Name of the Rose is Eco’s debut novel. Published in 1980, it is a historical murder mystery set in an Italian monastery in the year 1327, and an intellectual mystery combining semiotics in fiction, biblical analysis, medieval studies, and literary theory.
Looking at the murders through the eyes of William of Baskerville, Franciscan friar and unwitting detective, the performers in Abubukaka will find their way to the truth and judge the events. Abubukaka’s version of The Name of the Rose follows the two narrative lines in the original novel (the series of murders and the intellectual debate), adding a touch of humour.
