Amid his pride. A retrospective of César Manrique without César Manrique

Based on remarks by César Manrique which date back to 1979 and were subsequently included in his book Escrito en el fuego (1998), this exhibition aims to offer an unusual retrospective to mark the centenary (2019) of his birth and 40th anniversary of the remarks. Through his words, Manrique questions humans’ desperate quest for domination, for which they use borders, flags, nationalism, religion and political systems. The exhibition does not feature any of his visual works or manifestations of his relationship with nature. Instead, it focuses on a lesser-known facet of Manrique: his engagement with social issues.
