Fantasies – Pierre-Laurent Aimard

As part of its Chamber Music Programme, the Tenerife Auditorium is hosting a concert by French pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard under the title Fantasías (Fantasies). Fantasia, fantasy or fancy is a musical genre characterised by freedom in form and in inspiration. This is why it has been a favourite with composers wanting to give free rein to their freedom and creativity for centuries. Fantasias are imaginative pieces with an improvisatory character. They can be found in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century music as well as today.

Aimard’s piano recital at the Tenerife Auditorium will include fantasies from the Renaissance and the Baroque periods, e.g., by Dutch composer Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, to the twentieth century, as is the case of the Fantasy on Iambic Rhythm, from 1985, by English composer George Benjamin. Aimard will also perform Mozart’s three best-known fantasies.
