Religion has pride of place on the programme of events, although there are many key festive activities also. Of particular importance is the Procession of the Octave, in which the image of the Virgin is carried through the streets of Los Realejos on the shoulders of Puerto de la Cruz fishermen in a tradition dating back to the 18th century.
