Icod de los Vinos is paying tribute to St Andrew, a popular festival on the local calendar. On 29 November, the town gets ready for the Sled Ride Festival, or Fiesta de las Tablas, a unique tradition in the Canary Islands in which locals ride down the streets – in particular, the steep Calle de Antonio González, aka El Plano – in their makeshift oiled wood sleds. The whoosh of the wooden sleighs is enhanced by the aromas of freshly made wine, as local winemakers uncork the bottles from their latest harvest – a ritual replicated in many other towns. Visitors are invited to sip a glass of wine in family-run wineries, all of which open their doors on this day.
