From 26 July to 18 August, the town of Garachico is hosting its patronal festival, paying tribute to St Anne and St Roch. The town’s streets are filled with colour for the festival, which includes a wide range of activities. The big day is 16 August, St Roch’s Day, when there is a procession honouring the patron saint.
Hundreds of pilgrims fill the roads leading to the shrine of St Roch, at the entrance of the town. The whole town wakes up to the sound of “Viva San Roquito” (Long Live St Roch), “San Roquito” being the affectionate name used by locals to refer to the patron saint. Then, the revered statue of St Roch is carried by a group of devotees to the Parish Church of Santa Ana, where the main religious ceremony takes place.
