La Siervita Festival
As usual at this time of year, the streets of La Laguna are getting ready for one of the most important religious festivals on the island. María de León, aka Sor María de Jesús or La Siervita, was a lay sister born in El Sauzal. She died in 1731. She is associated with numerous miracles. On the occasion of the anniversary of her death, on 15 February, her incorrupt body is shown to her devotees.
The festival begins with the 9th La Sierva Walk, at 8.30am. At 5pm, the Convent of Santa Catalina in La Laguna will host the Special Mass and Flower Offering, followed by the Procession of La Sierva’s Baby Jesus. At 6pm, there will be a Memorial Mass at the La Sierva de Dios House Museum on the occasion of the 289th anniversary of Sor María de Jesús’s death.
Finally, on 16 February at 5pm, the Convent of Santa Catalina will host Mass and welcome the people in El Sauzal to take a look at La Sierva’s incorrupt body.
