The procession that takes place in La Orotava in June is the ultimate expression of the folklore of the Canary Islands. Full of colour and joy, it gathers thousands of visitors every year, eager to enjoy the internationally acclaimed traditional songs and dances, including the delicate folías.

The procession itself, which carries St Isidore to the shrine of El Calvario, dates back to 1846, when Mayor Alonso de Ascanio y Molina introduced the tradition upon returning from Madrid. The present-day itinerary was designed in 1936 by the Liceo de Taoro Cultural Society. Over the years, the pilgrims have been joined by horsemen, decked-out wagons, music bands, singers and instrument players.
