St Sebastian, patron saint of cattle breeders and of the municipality of Adeje – along with Our Lady of the Incarnation and St Ursula – is having his annual tribute in the form of a procession on 20 January.
In this procession, horses are the real stars, as hundreds of riders gather by the sea to get their traditional bath. This centuries-old custom is one of the most popular in southern Tenerife.
St Sebastian’s Procession draws everyone in Adeje, as well as visitors from the neighbouring towns, the northern part of the island and even the nearby island of La Gomera. Celebrations begin early in the morning with the Holy Mass. Afterwards, the image of St Sebastian is brought out of the church and into the beach, escorted by a retinue of horsemen.
