Traditional Nativity Scene on the Plaza de la Candelaria

03 December 2016
05 January 2017

The Nativity recreates the traditional image of Mary, Joseph and the Baby Jesus, accompanied by an ox and donkey. Intense colours play a key role in this year’s Santa Cruz Nativity, with prominence given also to one of the main figures in the depictions of the Birth of Jesus: the Virgin Mary, whose brightly coloured clothes ensure she stands out in the scene. Plants, stone, timber and plasterwork are just some of the materials used to make this year’s Nativity. On the 5 January, the Three Kings of the East will arrive to worship the Baby Jesus at the end of the official Parade through the city streets. Royal post-boxes have been installed to enable children to post their letters to the Kings. Located on the Candelaria Square and the junction of Calles Castillo and Robayna, the post-boxes, which are 2.70 metres tall and 1. 20 metres wide, will be remain in place until the night of 5 January.
