Trail description
The circular trail of Los Brezos offers hikers the chance to follow a route that links together the traditional pathways of Igonce, Los Brezos, Piedras de Carcho, El Luchón and Barranco La Gotera. With the exception of the stretch in Piedras de Carcho, which is within the Protected Nature Area of Corona Forestal Natural Park, the rest of the route is predominantly agricultural, journeying across the high hillside farmland in the south-east of the Island. These landscapes are home to significant pieces of heritage, such as the canals, irrigation channels, troughs, fountains, pools, volcanic ovens for drying fruit and the estate of Las Haciendas, a property of considerable value as it contains a traditional Canarian building and a wine press. It also boasts interesting geomorphological elements, among which Las Lajas de Chafa are worthy of special mention. As this is a round trip, you can choose to start at Plaza de Araya, La Charca del Pino or the Los Brezos Recreation Area. We suggest starting at the latter so you get to make use of the recreation area's facilities after your hike. This includes barbecue facilities, tables and benches, toilets, a sink, a children's play area and more, making it a great place for a well-earned rest. There is also a chapel you can visit here: the chapel of San Isidro. It was built in the 1970s thanks to the devotion and hard work of the locals, who come together every year on the last Sunday in May to celebrate their pilgrimage festivities.
