The sculptor Martín de Andújar was born in the Spanish city of Albacete in 1602 and learnt his trade alongside the great Sevillian sculptors of his time. He later travelled to Gran Canaria, where he produced a wooden sculpture and altarpiece of Saint Peter for the Santa Ana Basilica, and to Tenerife where he set himself up in Garachico. There, he worked on the main altarpiece in the church of Santa Ana and on two pieces for the monastery of Santa Lucía del Realejo: Cristo Nazareno and a figure of Nuestra Señora de los Afligidos. The sculptor Blas García Ravelo who created sculptures such as Cristo Predicador in the church of La Concepción in La Orotava, was one of Martín de Andújar's disciples during his time living in Garachico.
