José Viera y Clavijo

The historian, biologist and writer José de Viera y Clavijo is the most prominent figure in Canarian literature. He was born in Los Realejos in 1731 and wrote his first novel at the age of just 14. His work ranges through all literary genres, but worthy of special mention are his Noticias (News) on the overall history of the Canary Islands, which he spent two decades working on. He is the author of the Canary Islands Natural History Dictionary.
