Mercedes Pinto
Novelist, dramatist, poet and journalist. At the age of fourteen she had already received a number of awards at regional contests and had made a name for herself in the literary field, which led her to become known as the “Canarian Poetess”. She wrote her most famous work in Uruguay: Él (1926), which was adapted for the big screen by the film-maker Luis Buñuel in 1952. Mercedes Pinto died in Mexico City in October 1976 at the age of 93.
