This Tenerife-born poet belonged to the school of the Enlightenment and Neoclacissism. Tomás received support from his uncle, Juan de Iriarte, who was a disciple of Voltaire's and the director of the Royal Library of Madrid. He was the first dramatist to bring the Neoclassical style to a wider audience. He is universally remembered for his volume Fábulas Literarias (Literary Fables; 1782). He was also the director of the newspaper Mercurio Histórico y Político de Madrid.
