Alexander Von Humboldt

Alexander von Humboldt was born in Germany in 1769. He is considered one of the founders of modern geography, as well as being an explorer and expert in natural sciences. He came to Tenerife in 1799, where he climbed El Teide and went on to study the Island's geography and plant life. His work Kosmos mentions the landscapes in the La Orotava Valley, the blanket of clouds and Mount Teide. During his stay on the Island, he wrote: "I am leaving almost with tears in my eyes. I would like to settle here." His analyses of Tenerife's population, vegetation and volcanic origins are still hugely relevant in today's natural science studies.
