Miguel Villalba Hervás

This politician, lawyer, journalist, historian and freemason born in La Orotava in 1837 is one of the key figures in Tenerife's republicanism. He was at the helm of a number of newspapers in Santa Cruz de Tenerife before moving to Madrid, where in addition to his journalistic work, he joined the Revolutionary Board and was deported to Gran Canaria. During Spain's First Republic, he occupied the post of Civil Governor of the Canary Islands. He played an essential part in driving the development of freemasonry in the Canary Islands in the late 19th century.
