The Timple

Traditional musical instrument of Canarian folklore
Send page by mail
The timple is the musical instrument that best exemplifies Canarian folklore. This small stringed instrument consists of a guitar with four strings, typical in Tenerife, or five strings and a narrow convex soundboard. It is unique to the Canary Islands, although there are certain similarities with instruments from Latin American countries, such as the "charango" or the "tiple."

Today the timple is becoming more popular thanks to the efforts of young, expert timple players who have taken this instrument beyond the realms of folk music and into other styles of music.
