The Corpus Christi Octave is held on 23 June this year – on Thursday after Corpus Christi Sunday. In La Orotava, a town in the northern part of Tenerife, they have their big festival in Corpus Christi, honouring St Isidore the Labourer as well. La Orotava’s is the most popular Corpus Christi Festival in the Canary Islands, and one of the most attractive religious feasts in Spain.
The first Corpus Christi flower carpet was made in 1847. It was a simple piece, featuring a Baroque-style geometric pattern and using the cobblestone street as medium. The pattern was filled with flower petals. Local residents liked the result so much, that many a nobleman commissioned their own flower carpet. This marked the beginning of a traditional flower craft on which La Orotava has earned a household name.
