The historic ensemble of Casas Altas (Jama)

This site was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest by the Canarian Government in 2004 and is shared by the municipalities of Vilaflor and Arona. This is a traditional hamlet that contains wonderfully preserved examples of southern Tenerife's typical popular architecture. It features characteristic elements of the rural tasks carried out in the area, such as atarjea irrigation channels, wells, tanks, ovens, stone pathways, farm terraces, caves and much more. The evidence suggests that this collection of houses was one of the first settlements in the Jama region, which dates back several centuries and, in fact, is mentioned in the Island's first land distribution plans made by Adelantado Alonso Fernández de Lugo.
