Tenerife is a destination that is committed to sustainable development and caring for the environment. This is clear from the work carried out by the Technology and Renewable Energy Institute (ITER), which is in charge of the area's wind farms, photovoltaic facilities and ecologically designed buildings. Moreover, there are programmes on the Island that seek to recover natural areas, as well as environmentally certified accommodation and a number of ecological projects involving gardens, transport, festivals and so on, with a view to reinforcing other sustainability measures. We might highlight the fact that 48% of the Island is covered by 43 protected nature areas that make Tenerife a natural paradise.

Sustainable tourism

There are companies on Tenerife that are dedicated to having a positive ecological footprint. Among their initiatives, those devoted to tourism include collaborating with micro-sponsors to promote reforestation with the aim of planting enough trees to offset any potential ecological harm caused by tourism. This means that visitors who are concerned about the sustainability of the area they are visiting can contribute to counteracting the negative impact of their stay by helping with reforestation. Tenerife also has a variety of accommodation options and activities that ensure that visitors' ecological footprint is as small as possible. Visitors can cooperate with the Council's Environmental Participation and Volunteering Office in their tasks of marine preservation, reforestation and repopulation of native species. In Adeje, the Marine Classroom Project has created an ecology camp for visitors to take part in environmental activities and take diving lessons.

Ecotourism

Tenerife boasts a wide array of tourist services that take special care of the environment: nature activities, trips to country estates and farms specialising in typical organic products, rural accommodation that blends into its surroundings, and large hotels that are committed to meeting international ecological standards under the Travelife Seal of Approval – so much so that it has become Europe's leading destination in the number of hotels that have been awarded the seal.
