Trail description
This is an easy hike around a lovely volcanic cone and into the crater. It also provides fabulous views over the Valley of La Orotava and the sea of clouds that sometimes covers it. This is a great place from which to observe the transition from the thriving Canarian pine forest to the mountain bush. The cone is made up of various kinds of volcanic matter, but the most striking are the volcanic bombs dotted all over its slopes. Since this is where the pine forest meets the broom bushes, the Park's most common birds, such as the Canarian chiffchaff, the Berthelot's pipit and the spectacled warbler, coexist with woodland birds, such as blue chaffinches, blue tits, blackbirds and robins. You might also catch sight of a sparrow hawk, which are more often found in forest areas than open landscapes. Among the many invertebrate species that live here, one of the most interesting is locally known as the "pine caterpillar" (Calliteara fortunata). This impressive caterpillar with long hairs and bright colours lives happily in the broom bushes or in the pine trees.
