Fire balls rolling down the mountain
For better or for worse, Garachico is the town that has felt the effects of the rumbling volcanoes most intensely, which is also expressed in its festivities and traditions. Every five years, the town commemorates the eruption of the Trevejo volcano by holding the Fires of Risco festival, a re-enactment during which flaming fire balls are sent rolling down the mountainside.
Another long-standing event in this area is the route of traditions. One of the activities for the brave involves descending the steep slopes taking huge leaps several metres long aided only by a staff, as the locals have been doing for years.
