Tenerife Film Commission awards sixth sustainable production distinction to the feature film ‘In the Grey’

The shooting of the feature film ‘In the Grey’, which was shot with the services of Mercurio Film, a division of Fresco Film, joins the other five projects that already have this sustainability distinction on the island.

Tenerife Film Commission has awarded a new sustainable production distinction to the feature film ‘In the Grey’, directed by Guy Ritchie, and produced by Green Gold Productions Ltd and Black Bear (Guy Ritchie). The film was shot over 35 days in different locations in Tenerife, mainly urban, in September and October 2023.

During production, the film team worked hand in hand with the services of Mercurio Film, a division of Fresco Film, a company that advocates the philosophy of sustainable filming. For the shoot on Tenerife, an island with its own special considerations, Mercurio Film made an even greater effort at environment protection, adapting and working to minimise the environmental impact, despite the limited resources.

To this end, the service implemented the use of refillable bottles for the team, encouraging their use with a special production bottle. In addition, 1,361 20-litre bottles of water were consumed, thus avoiding approximately 89,826 units of 33cl bottled water; strict control of the waste generated was implemented, hiring specialised companies for its recycling or appropriate destruction; and the service opted for paperless production, keeping the project’s accounts digitally to reduce the receipt of physical invoices and the use of paper in accounting. All contracts with the production team, cast and crew were signed digitally to avoid the unnecessary use of paper.

As part of its commitment to sustainability, Mercurio Film hired local technicians, cast and crew, where possible; in fact, 98% of the crew contracts were local. In terms of catering, nearly 10,000 menus were served based on local produce, avoiding single-use materials and, where necessary, opting for compostable materials, and customised memos were also produced with specific recommendations for each department.

As a joint initiative of the client Black Bear and Fresco Film, both donated five radio stations to the Tenerife Firefighters Consortium, which they had lost during the terrible fire in August in Tenerife. This action was carried out as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) policies.

With this new addition, the Tenerife Film Commission has now awarded six sustainability distinctions: ‘Cleo’ animation series by La Casa Animada, the documentary ‘SoƱando con alas’ by Birding Canarias, the ‘Ann Summers’ advertising videos which provided the service to the production by Canary Productions. Mondo TV Studios, whose headquarters on the island has measures to minimise the carbon footprint, carried out the production of the children’s animation ‘MeteoHeroes 2’, while Sauce Film carried out the filming service of the series ‘A Town Called Malice’, avoiding protected natural areas.

Greenshooting in Tenerife

Tenerife Film Commission has a sustainable production distinction for productions shot in Tenerife. To this end, production companies contact the Tenerife Film Commission during pre-production, and its ecomanager coordinates the action plan to be implemented with specialised sustainable production advice. During filming or production, a follow-up is carried out and finally, the distinction is awarded once the sustainability actions that have been implemented have been justified.
