The two animated films co-produced in Tenerife are in the running for Best Animated Film at the 39th edition of the Goya Awards

‘Mariposas Negras’, the 2D animated feature film directed by Tenerife documentary filmmaker David Baute and ‘Superklaus’, the 3D animated film directed by Steven Majaury and Andrea Sebastiá share the same category at the Goya Awards 2025. The Film Academy awards gala will be held on the 8th of February.
‘Mariposas Negras’ is a film directed by the Tenerife documentary filmmaker David Baute, who is making his debut with his first animated film, co-produced by the Tenerife production company Tinglado Films and Ikiru Films, with funding from the Government of the Canary Islands, the Cabildo of Tenerife and RTVE. ‘Superklaus’ is a 3D animated film, directed by Steven Majaury and Andrea Sebastiá and co-produced between Spain and Canada, with the participation of the Tenerife production company 3Doubles Producciones, a company associated with the Tenerife Film Commission. It is supported by the Government of the Canary Islands and the local television Televisión Canaria.
Both ‘Mariposas Negras’ and ‘Superklaus’ feature original music by Canarian composer Diego Navarro. The musician and conductor has recently been recognised with the Cygnus 2025 Award for best original soundtrack for the score for ‘Mariposas Negras’.
After more than 13 years of teamwork, ‘Mariposas Negras’ has been selected for the prestigious Annecy Festival in Sitges and has travelled internationally to the Havana International Film Festival, the Amsterdam International Documentary Film Festival, the Mar de Plata International Film Festival and the International Film Festival of India. It has recently won the Forqué Awards 2024 and Gaudí Awards 2025 for Best Animated Film, becoming the first project from the Canary Islands to win this award.
It is a moving cinematic narrative inspired by real women, and proposes a journey from Africa, the Caribbean and Asia to an uncertain future for all humanity. Climate change impacts the lives of Tanit, Valeria and Shaila, three women living in very different parts of the world, but with a common life story: they lose everything due to the consequences of global warming and are forced to leave everything behind.

‘SuperKlaus’ is an action-adventure comedy aimed at family audiences that has been widely praised in the industry for its animation, the coexistence of humour and action, and for its successful approach to family and Christmas themes. The story begins when Father Christmas, after a severe blow to the head, begins to believe that he is SuperKlaus: the superhero protagonist of a successful film series. Her new identity unleashes chaos at the North Pole and only Billie, a resourceful and brave girl, accompanied by her inseparable robot C.A.R.L. and the elf Leo, can restore order and save Christmas before it is too late.
The film’s original soundtrack was recorded by the prestigious City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra at the legendary Smecky Studios, adding an epic and emotional touch to this Christmas adventure.
‘SuperKlaus’ had its eagerly awaited premiere at the International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia, in the Sitges Family section, where it was enthusiastically received by both audiences and critics. Subsequently, it continued its tour of festivals such as Seminci and Isla Calavera, consolidating its position as one of the most outstanding family animation films of the year.
