Tenerife Film Commission is attending this year’s major events

EFM, Kidscreen, Cartoon Movie and Series Mania, our upcoming engagements

At Tenerife Film Commission we like telling you first-hand about all the reasons and advantages that make Tenerife an increasingly attractive place for animation and live action international projects. That’s why along with local production companies, we’re travelling to the most relevant events of the first quarter of the year: European Film Market (Berlinale), Kidscreen Summit, Cartoon Movie and Series Mania

We’re taking part in Kidscreen Summit, from 11 to 14 February in Miami (US), under the Animation from Spain umbrella. Four production companies are coming with us: 3 Doubles Producciones, B-Water Studios, Mondo TV Iberoamérica and Salero Animation Studio. We’re also attending Cartoon Movie in Burdeaux (France), from 5 to 7 March.

As for feature films and series, we can meet at the European Film Market and Drama Series Days (Berlin), from 9 to 12 February at the Cinema from Spain stand (MGB, C1). Orange Valley Canarias, Kikazaru 360 and Nu Boyana Canarias are joining us in the market. And finally, we’ll be at Series Mania (Lille, France), taking place from 25 to 27 March.

In Tenerife, production companies can enjoy 40% tax rebate for foreign production or a 45-40 % tax credit for Spanish productions or co-productions. In addition, you can establish your company in the Canary Islands Special Zone (ZEC) and pay just 4% Corporate Income Tax, as opposed to 25% applicable in the rest of the country.

Apart from these advantages, production companies will also find valuable local talent, a large number of specialised production companies and technological tools like the Teide HPC supercomputer, the second most powerful in Spain, which makes rendering so much easier. But that’s not all! Tenerife offers you the chance to work in a kind, relaxing place, at the ideal temperature and surrounded by unique nature and plenty of leisure options while at the same time being in an executive professional environment plus having easy daily connections to the main cities in mainland Spain and Europe.

We’ll be at the European Film Market and Series Mania with Canary Islands Film, the Canary Islands film promotion umbrella.

EPC CANARIAS keeps developing

The company is committed to training film professionals

EPC CANARIAS is committed to training professionals, so they take part in courses in which Canarian workers can widen their knowledge and learn to handle the equipment owned by the company.

In Lanzarote different workshops have been held including a Camera Assistant Workshop where the company made available first-class professional equipment and technicians specialised in using them. The workshop was fully booked.

La Laguna Historical Film Festival turning into a benchmark

It will take place from October 31 to November 4 in La Laguna, Tenerife

History and cinema go hand in hand for the third consecutive year through the launching of the third edition of the La Laguna Historical Film Festival (FICHLA). This proposal by Festeam Comunicación y Eventos S.L. positions the city of La Laguna as a benchmark for this audio-visual genre.  A selection of content becoming increasingly prominent as a source of inspiration for creative people, and also widely accepted by the audience.  The event will take place from October 31 to November 4 at Espacio Cultural Aguere, in La Laguna.

This project is supported once more by the Local Government of San Cristobal de La Laguna, through the Department of Historical Heritage, as well as by Government of the Canary Islands through the Directorate General of Cultural Heritage.

This time, FICHLA acknowledges history, focusing its theme on the 50th anniversary of the death of Martin Luther King.

The big news this year is that two competitions will take place, one focused on feature films and, the other one, on documentaries.  The winners will get the “Witness of History 2018” prize, valued at 1,000 euros.

FICHLA 2018 enters into a historical agreement

Festeam Communication and Events S.L. has entered into an agreement with the prestigious History Channel. Through this collaboration, FICHLA’s management has obtained the exclusive European rights to one of the most anticipated documentaries: “Rise Up: The Movement That Changed America” (also known as “MLK Assassination: 50th Anniversary Special”).

FICHLA will also host the “The Struggle of Lyndon B. Johnson” exhibition, reflecting the hard work by the US president in the battle for racial equality in North America.

More awards with a taste of history

Series with historical content will also be present in this edition.  With the premise of continuing to promote creations of historical content, FICHLA 2018 will grant an award to the prestigious Spanish series “Tiempos de Guerra,” (Times of War) by Atresmedia Televisión and produced in cooperation with Bambú Producciones.

The Quirino Awards to be held in Tenerife

The first Quirino Latin American animation competition will be held from 6 to 8 April

header_facebook_v4

The initiative, whose aim is to highlight the value of Latin American talent and industry, will give awards to all the different formats: feature films, short films, school pieces, series, online series, etc. at a gala on 7 April in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

The event also aims to create networks and encourage the films to travel from both sides of the Atlantic. On 6 April a professional meeting will be held on the island to bring together the animation sectors of Latin America, Portugal, Andorra and Spain.

The date of these awards was announced at the opening ceremony of the Cuernavaca International Animation, Videogames and Comic Festival of Pixelatl, Mexico.

The awards are named after the creator of the first animation feature film, the Argentinean of Italian descent Quirino Cristiani, who in 1917 directed “El Apóstol”; an Argentinean production in which 58,000 hand-made drawings were used and shot in 35 mm, in addition to several scale models representing public buildings and the streets of Buenos Aires. His work was known even to Disney, who travelled to Argentina in 1941 for the premiere of “Fantasia”.

The Quirino Awards are sponsored by Turismo de Tenerife in collaboration with some of the major international animation events held in Latin America, like the Mexican Cuernavaca International Animation, Videogames and Comic Festival; the Spanish 3D Wire, International Animation, Videogames and New Media Market; and many other Latin American professionals.

Tenerife is now even more attractive to film producers

A 5% increase on the existing tax breaks for national and international productions shooting on the Island.

Tenerife is an ideal film location as on top of its excellent natural conditions and top-notch professionals, it also offers unique tax breaks which are not available outside the Canary Islands.  The new Budget Law has included an increase on these incentives which make the Island even more attractive to national and international producers.

According to the change the Act introduced on Corporate Income Tax, which came into effect on 1 January 2017, the new tax rebate for international productions is now at 40% (5% above the previous situation). Regarding national productions, the incentive goes up to 45 % on the first million Euros invested (as opposed to the previous 40 %) and 40% on excess expenditure (replacing the former 38%). Similarly the 50 % limit on aid received is now increased to 60 % for cross-border co-productions and 70% for films by new directors with a budget under one million Euros.

In both types of productions, the limit for creative staff is now at 100,000 € per person, replacing the former 50,000 € cap.

The norm also specifies that the SPVs will be regarded as producers provided that they are set up as an independent production company in compliance with the requirements in article 4.n of Law 55/2007, of 28 December, join the production before the end of the shooting and appoint an executive producer to carry out the production.

Tenerife, a natural film set

Tenerife goes from strength to strength as a film location. In 2016 a record figure of 116 national and international productions were shot on the Island, bringing 6.5 million Euros.

Tenerife Film Commission (TFC) gives producers advice on locations, permits and all other services they may need while shooting on the Island.

The island’s wide range of landscapes within a very short distance includes volcanic, subtropical, and urban areas plus the coastline and the sea, which can double for many different parts of the world. Technology, local film production companies, tax breaks plus an enviable climate allowing shooting in exteriors year round blend together to make Tenerife a top film location.
