The international cast includes John Lynch, Tomohisa Yamashita, Laura Bach, Mònica López, Alexandre Willaume, Katharine O’Donnelly, John Lynch, Amelia Hoy and Mónica López, plus the special collaboration of Álvaro Morte

The Island is currently host to the series The Head, a production by The Mediapro Studio in association with Hulu Japan and HBO Asia. It has the support of the Environment and Roads Departments of the Cabildo de Tenerife in terms of managing the shooting permissions as well as the collaboration of Turismo de Tenerife through its Tenerife Film Commission. For the shoot, that will last 50 days (from 11 July to 19 September), 40 local professionals have been hired in addition to ten companies of the island’s film sector.

The Head is the first fiction series by Àlex and David Pastor in Spain. The Canary Islands and Iceland are the locations chosen for this survival thriller directed by Jorge Dorado (El embarcadero, Mindscape). The series features an international cast that includes John Lynch (The Terror), Tomohisa Yamashita (Code Blue), ) Alexandre Willaume (Bajo la superficie, Deep State, Tomb Raider), Laura Bach (Sprinter Galore, Rita), Mònica López (Hierro, En la ciudad, El habitante incierto, Acusados), plus the special collaboration of the Spanish actor Álvaro Morte (the professor, the brain behind the ambitious assault in Money Heist). The long, dark Antarctic months, the cold, the wind and the vast extensions of ice together with the feeling of loneliness and claustrophobia are the distinctive features of this fiction, which consists of six 50-minute episodes. The plot of The Head, with dialogues in English and Danish, is set at the international station Polaris VI, on the Antarctica. A reduced group of scientists from different countries is in charge of keeping the base in operation during the long polar night. But at the height of winter, the station stops all communication with the exterior.

The Head is mainly being shot inside two factory premises in the municipality of La Laguna. The only exterior location has been Punta del Inglés, at a singular spot in Parque Rural de Anaga. Shooting has also been made in interiors in special locations such as Auditorio de Tenerife, Finca Tristán, the Floatel Reliance platform or the Brifor unit facilities in La Guancha. In addition to the support of the Cabildo de Tenerife, the production has also enjoyed the help of the town councils of La Laguna and Santa Cruz.

The local companies hired by this international production include some of the members of Tenerife Film Commission like Blackout Films, with their postproduction and DIT services; Location One Islas Canarias and The Boss Transports, that hire shooting equipment; Archipiélago Renting, vehicle hire; Grupo Suardíaz shipping company; Riskmedia Insurance Brokers; hotel Taburiente, and the model agency Bewateragency.

The project, one of THE MEDIAPRO STUDIO’s major investments, took its first steps in 2017 at the prestigious International Series Mania Forum, held in Paris. The Head was presented at a pitching session and aroused great interest among representatives from the media and entertainment sector.

According to Javier Méndez, Chief Content Officer of THE MEDIAPRO STUDIO, “The Head is an example of the direction we’re headed in, with ambitious and complex international projects based on great stories. The Head is a major step in the Studio’s strategy to guarantee that the best stories reach our clients around the world; to do so, we have excellent partner like Hulu Japan”.

Laura Fernández Espeso, Corporate Director and CoHead of TV of THE MEDIAPRO STUDIO, commented: “The Head is the fruit of many months’ labor to meet deadlines when demand for content is huge. Having talent like Jorge Dorado and Àlex and David Pastor working from the beginning to build and shape this project, altogether with a great international cast and a prominent partner such as Hulu Japan, gives an idea of the magnitude of the project. It is a privilege for THE MEDIAPRO STUDIO to bring this amazing series to the audiovisual market”.

“After a process lasting two and half years, we at THE MEDIAPRO STUDIO are proud to bring this unique story to the screen”, explained Tellem. “’The Head’” is about Good and Evil. Our story begins when a group of people find themselves completely disconnected from the world, in the frozen darkness of the South Pole winter. For the unknown killer among them, this is the perfect setting. For everybody else, telling good from evil just might be the thing that saves your life.”

“In ‘The Head’, I made some contribution to the development, which is quite unusual,” director Jorge Dorado explains, “because directors normally join in at a much later stage. And this is very interesting, because this way, the story in a way becomes yours too.”

The director also emphasizes the work of THE MEDIAPRO STUDIO: “At the moment, no one else in Spain is doing projects of this magnitude and with such international ambition.”

Àlex and David, who have worked on the screenplays of “The Head”, along with Isaac Sastre, define the production as a “claustrophobic thriller with a central mystery.” “The series plays with two different times, because the idea is to find out who the murderer is, the reasons why they have done this, and if there is something else behind or beyond what seem to be a series of crimes,” they suggest.

The Pastor brothers have a brilliant track record in filmmaking with titles like “Carriers” and “The Last Days”, both written and directed by them, and “SELF/LESS”, written by them, directed by Tarsem Singh (“The Cell”) and starring Ben Kingsley and Ryan Reynolds. They made their debut in the TV world with the series “Incorporated”, for the US channel Sy Fy, produced by Pearl Street Films, which is Matt Damon’s and Ben Affleck’s company. The Pastor brothers were in charge of the screenplay and the direction of the pilot episode. Recently, they have directed the film “Hogar” for Netflix.

EPC in the vanguard

The camera rental company offers state-of-theart equipment

EPC can be proud of being one of the veteran camera hire companies. It offers excellent services and filming equipment including cutting edge technology like RED WEAPON HELIUM 8K.

We work in a sector that is constantly evolving and changing because of the demands in the projects created by thousands of people. Every single project is unique and so they each demand a new approach. In these requirements EPC has found their reason for growing, improving and keeping ahead of this evolution, overcoming every single problem thanks to their technical team and their up-to-date products.

WEAPON offers incredible image resolution and quality to make every project come alive. RED has gone a step further with this product, which enhances flexibility and beauty, offering up to 17 times higher resolution than HD and 4 times that of 4K.

The Canaries has proven to be an emerging source of creativity for filmmakers across the globe. Gifted with volcanic landscapes, forests and beaches, the Fortunate Islands are a dream come true.

EPC, based in Tenerife and Lanzarote, can not only meet the requirements of each professional but they can also tackle the needs of every location with accessories like the splashbag. Built with a double layer of PVC, the splashbag is ideal to shoot on the beach and it can move at a depth of up to 10 metres.

Cooke S7 i – EPC

The visual aspect of a film is everything. A project might spend moths in pre-production before shooting starts. At that stage, the general look of the image is decided. A camera is not enough to achieve this vision. Among the most important tools in camera equipment are the lenses. It is necessary to choose the right lenses for each film.

EPC has no competitors in this field, as they have a wide range of lenses including Cooke S7i, which shoots in full frame and beyond. The new Cooke S7i T2:0 Full Frame have been designed to cover the demands of full frame sensors up to an 8K area. Superb mechanic and optical performance. Control of flares, distortions and spherical aberrations in the largest apertures.

Those who seek to innovate and a different look will also find a solution at EPC with their SF Cooke anamorphic series, including the new Cooke sf 135mm. All the features cinematographers demand today, are covered by the Cooke SF. SF stands for Special Flare because they take flares, aberrations and bokeh to new visual domains. The anamorphic 135mm SF corrects side and longitudinal colour aberrations, granting unmatchable shape, form and soul to the area of the image.

Movement matters. A sudden vibrant movement usually produces negative, frantic emotions. In contrast, a smooth steady camera movement gives a feeling of peace.

For the latter, EPC has a MoVI Pro, one of the most advanced camera movement systems thanks to its versatility, efficiency and intelligence.

But this is not all at EPC. There are no small roles in projects and EPC covers the whole camera department. The video assistance is vitally important so the best equipment must be offered to view the scenes.

Odyssey 7Q+

Oddissey 7Q+ with hand-held system and adaptor for v-mount batteries, has been tested in film productions, documentaries, TV and other types of shoot. It is ideal for the most demanding productions and the most keen-sighted DoPs. Blackmagic Video Assist 4k, also has a hand-held system and v-mount battery adaptor.

The Blackmagic Video Assist monitor offers the possibility of recording and supervising images taken with all types of cameras. It includes a touch screen and tools to make it easier to control exposure, set focus and framing.

Tenerife is now even more attractive to film producers

A 5% increase on the existing tax breaks for national and international productions shooting on the Island.

film_helicoptero_062_faro_punta_teno_gigantes_buenavista-del-norte_volcanes_territorio_antiguo_alta-1280x853

Tenerife is an ideal film location as on top of its excellent natural conditions and top-notch professionals, it also offers unique tax breaks which are not available outside the Canary Islands.  The new Budget Law has included an increase on these incentives which make the Island even more attractive to national and international producers.

According to the change the Act introduced on Corporate Income Tax, which came into effect on 1 January 2017, the new tax rebate for international productions is now at 40% (5% above the previous situation). Regarding national productions, the incentive goes up to 45 % on the first million Euros invested (as opposed to the previous 40 %) and 40% on excess expenditure (replacing the former 38%). Similarly the 50 % limit on aid received is now increased to 60 % for cross-border co-productions and 70% for films by new directors with a budget under one million Euros.

In both types of productions, the limit for creative staff is now at 100,000 € per person, replacing the former 50,000 € cap.

The norm also specifies that the SPVs will be regarded as producers provided that they are set up as an independent production company in compliance with the requirements in article 4.n of Law 55/2007, of 28 December, join the production before the end of the shooting and appoint an executive producer to carry out the production.

Tenerife, a natural film set

Tenerife goes from strength to strength as a film location. In 2016 a record figure of 116 national and international productions were shot on the Island, bringing 6.5 million Euros.

Tenerife Film Commission (TFC) gives producers advice on locations, permits and all other services they may need while shooting on the Island.

The island’s wide range of landscapes within a very short distance includes volcanic, subtropical, and urban areas plus the coastline and the sea, which can double for many different parts of the world. Technology, local film production companies, tax breaks plus an enviable climate allowing shooting in exteriors year round blend together to make Tenerife a top film location.
