Three tips to enjoy Tenerife in a responsible way

Tenerife is an ideal tourist destination for nature lovers. From the coast with the imposing cliffs of Los Gigantes to such idyllic environments as the laurel forest of the Anaga Natural Park.

If we want to continue preserving these dreamlike natural landscapes, it is important to make the visit with the greatest possible respect for the environment where we are.

Today we would like to give you three tips to generate the smallest footprint possible on your journey through the island.

Respect the path markers of the Footpath Network

The Footpath Network of the island has 200 approved trails and more than 500 kilometers where visitors can discover the natural wonders of Tenerife.

In each one of them, there are signs indicating the path to follow: the colors indicate the type of trail (long distance, short distance or footpaths) and the position of the stripes marks the direction, in parallel they indicate the continuity and when they cross they warn us that we are heading in the wrong direction.

It is important not to leave the established trails, because even if we are itching with curiosity and adventurous spirit,  we could erode under our feet the terrain of these natural spaces and cause irreparable damage.

On the other hand, we can prevent accidents by getting into unprepared terrain or by getting disoriented and not being able to find the original route again.

Do not alter the landscape

In recent years, piling rocks on trails and beaches has become a real trend on social media. Although it is tempting to alter the environment to get the most Instagram-worthy photo, this practice is not as harmless as it seems.

One of its consequences is that it puts local flora and fauna at risk, because it alters the humidity and temperature conditions that are key for microfauna and small insects.

The next time you find yourself in a landscape worth photographing, remember not to move anything in the environment.

Collect the waste you generate

Do you know about plogging? This sporting practice, that has become a trend in recent years, consists in picking up garbage from the trails while jogging along them.

All you have to do is to choose your favorite trail, select the right footwear and equip yourself with a garbage bag and gloves to pick up the garbage you find along the way. Not only is it a way to enjoy the island’s landscapes, it also helps the environment.

If running is not for you, we also recommend you to carry a small bag to keep the waste you produce and help us maintain our forests and beaches clean.
