The best windsurfers in the world have once again tamed the waves and wind on the beach of El Cabezo (El Médano). Almost 100 participants from 20 different countries have gathered at the PWA World Cup Tenerife to compete in the men, women and junior categories.

For the ninth time in a row, the PWA World Cup Tenerife has established itself as an essential event for windsurfers from all over the world. In the men’s category stand out names such as Ricardo Campello, Philip Köster, Jaeger Stone, Víctor Fernández and Alex Mussolini.

In the women’s category, Iballa Moreno, Justyna Sniady, Sarah-Quita and Lina Erpenstein performed very well. The event was broadcast live on the official website of the PWA World Cup as well as on the different social media of the championship. After several intense competition days, the winners of the waves and the wind were determined.

In the men’s category, the Australian Jaeger Stone beat the former champion Victor Fernandez. Stone achieved his best performance in the finals, his first victory in a PWA event. The German Philipp Köster was able to reach the third place after competing against the Venezuelan Ricardo Campello.

On the women’s podium, Spaniard Iballa Ruano secured the highest rank against Polish Justyna Sniady. This victory consolidates. This victory consolidates Iballa as a brand new PWA Tenerife champion for the fourth time in a row. In the battle for third position competed Sarah-Quita Offringa and Lina Erpenstein. The sporting duel was won by Sarah-Quita Offringa.

The juniors were also able to compete and show what the future of windsurfing holds for us. Alexia Kiefer Santana, Julia Pasquale in the U17 category and Mar de Arce Sánchez in the U20 category won the U15 women’s competition.

Carlos Kiefer Santana can be very proud of his triumph in the men’s U13 category. Also the Japanese Hayata Ishii reached in the category U15 and Liam Dunkerbeck in the category U17 the winners podium. In the U20, the victory finally went to Mariano Gil from Gran Canaria.

For this reason, it is important to always consult the weather forecast before setting out on the route, and to stay well informed about the paths ask the tourist information offices and visitor centres.

What do you need for hiking in Tenerife?

As in other sports, hiking requires having adequate equipment, although the difficulty is always the path itself. The essential equipment is good hiking boots and a backpack where you should put water, food and warm clothes, as well as a hat if you need it.

Sometimes it is really difficult to decide which hikes to do in Tenerife. The impressive coastal landscape, its legendary volcanoes, its lush forests… There is a huge selection! This path takes you on a continuous ascent through some of the most curious places on Mount Teide. The hike starts in Degollada de Guajara and takes you to Alto de Guajara at 2,715 meters. During the ascent you can see the southern slope of the island as well as the rest of the islands of the archipelago.

This hike is one of the hardest and most rewarding trails at the same time in the Teide National Park. Its difficulty is high and it takes about five hours to complete it. The beginning is the Montaña Blanca path, which leads you almost to the top of Mount Teide (only 200 metres from the summit). When you arrive at the viewpoint Mirador de la Fortaleza, you can see the entire northern slope of Tenerife.

If you want to climb the highest summit of Spain, you need a special permit for the last 200 metres to Mount Teide. You can also stay at the Altavista refuge and, if you get up early enough, even see one of the most beautiful sunrises.

Contrasts of volcanic rocks and the blue sea await you on this path that runs through the Natural Reserve of Malpaís de Güímar. It is a circular walk, so the beginning and the end are the same, which makes the route easier. On the path you can see some of the endemic species of the archipelago, such as spurge, cardons or tabaibas.

Start the hike in the green forests of Anaga until you reach the rugged coast of Punta del Hidalgo… That’s the challenge of the 10-kilometre Cruz del Carmen – Punta del Hidalgo trail, which takes about four hours. On the way you will find interesting landscapes, such as the laurel forest to more rural areas or small hamlets such as Chinamada.

This is a particularly beautiful trail at night. In June, the blue bugloss flowers first, and later the red bugloss of Mount Teide. The hike can be easily connected with public transport, both at the beginning and at the end. Therefore, it is advisable to check the timetables in advance, bearing in mind that the total distance takes about four and a half hours.

About 150 surfers from around the world gathered on the stage of Las Americas Pro during six days of disputed tests. The championship was broadcast live on WSL’s official YouTube channel, with thousands of views and live comments from hundreds of internet surfers, who connected to see the great atmosphere and the pleasant climate of Tenerife.

In the men’s final two Frenchmen Paul Cesar Distinguin and Timothee Bisso competed against eachother. Timothee Bisso secured the victory with 15.10 points, thanks to a big wave that brought him directly 8.33 points.

In the women’s final, the Basque Leticia Canales and Daniela Baldini from Tenerife fought to win the championship. In a tight final with only 1.5 points difference, the local hero Daniela Boldini ended up winning and earned the cheers of the audience.

Sporting events 2019 in Tenerife – a year full of new challenges

The sports calendar of Tenerife 2019 is full of big events and that’s not surprising. Top athletes such as tennis players Dominic Thiem and Karolína Plíšková, both top 10 ATP and WTA, were training on the island for their tournaments this year, but they were not the only ones training with us.

Cyclists like Alberto Contador or Chris Froome; football teams such as Liverpool FC, Manchester City, FC Augsburg or even Olympic swimmers like Sarah Sjöström were in the training camp in Tenerife. The place “Izquierda de la Palmera” will once again attract surfers from around the world to compete against each other in this scoring event for WSL’s European Qualifying Series.

The Vuelta al Teide Cycling Tour will take you through iconic places in Tenerife such as the Teno Rural Park or the Teide National Park on March 30th. The main route of the tour consists of a total of 160 kilometres with a total ascent of almost 4,000 metres – a tough test. The Half Teide is another modality with 90 kilometres of route and “only” 2,000 meters of altitude.

The event combines some of the island’s best hiking trails with local traditions, culture, cuisine and encouraging tours of such emblematic places as Anaga or El Teide. This year’s edition will take place from May 21st to 25th and Puerto de la Cruz will once again be the meeting and starting point for those who are passionate about nature and its paths.

From zero to 3,555 metres of altitude. The Tenerife Bluetrail is the highest mountain race in Spain and the second largest in Europe. And for good reason, because the over 100-kilometre track in Ultra Trail mode is a challenge for all participants. Over 2,000 runners registered for the various modalities in 2018, highlighting the participation of the rarámuri (tarahumara = ethnicity from northern Mexico known for long-distance runs through deserts, canyons, mountains) Lorena Ramírez who finished third in the senior category. This year, the race will take place on June 8th and the registrations are already open.

PWA Windsurf

El Médano is an ideal place to practice windsurfing. This makes it one of the most privileged circuits of the PWA World Championship, which will visit us again in the second half of August. In addition to the World Windsurfing Championships, there will be workshops to repair and create surfboards and training courses, as well as a great range of food and leisure activities.

In October 2019, all the athletes who are looking for a special challenge in nature, such as the millennial laurel forests, can be lucky. Because the Santa Cruz Extreme will be held in Tenerife. This run leads through the Anaga Rural Park, which starts from the beach Las Teresitas and leads through the forests of the Laurisilva along old farmhouses. This run offers three different levels of difficulty.

 

International Marathon of Santa Cruz de Tenerife

One of the most famous international marathons is the Santa Cruz de Tenerife marathon. The last time (fifth edition) 4,000 participants from 60 different countries came together. This urban race leads through the streets of the capital of Tenerife and is a great festive event, with a lot of sportsmanship and above all good weather. This event will be one of the last sporting events of the year as it takes place on November 10th.
